How do I check codes in a Ford Truck?

It's an 88 F-150 Long bed, 351 EFI.

How do I recall stored trouble codes?

well mac a long time ago i went to school and learned how to do it, but i think i've forgot most of it. last time i had to a bought a code reader for about 30 dollars. if i recall correctly you unplug a gray plastic plug from a harness on the left inner fender near the firewall and you can use a analog volt meter and count needle sweeps, like you do flashes on a gm car.

you don't need a break out box to read codes, unless a lot has changed since i last worked on one. the break out box is for probing the system to get readings with a DVM.

Mac,

Ed is correct. You can retrieve codes with an analog meter or a test light. Install a ground connection to the diagnostic terminal at the ALDL and readd the meter sweepr as "pulses". When I get to my home office, I'll post a link to the code tables and instructions.

All I can remember about the instructions is the very last line saying something about dynamite, safe working distance, and legal representation, I think...

scoob the break out box has 60, i think, holes for the leads of a DVM. when you read the codes the flow down chart for trouble shooting will say to check for XX voltage at #45 and #12. all you do is probe the 2 places in the break out box and you have your answer. i like it, quick and simple. i tihnk honda uses a similar set up. other than the cost of a break out box it's a fast easy way to check voltage. on the other hand my scanner reads all the voltage when i check for codes and such. now i'm sure we'll get a ford mechanic on here to flame me, because it has been a long time since i've done it.
