The Harmonic Balancer Puller trashed the threads on my crank, in the wisdom of this site can somebody direct me to the HeliCoil Kit to repair the threads, I don't think chasing the threads will work, Helicoil looks like the last option before the machine shop.

 

I've never tried helicoiling, but I screwed up my crank threads (putting the balancer back on the wrong way) and just used a simple tap. Worked just fine.

 

did it mess up the first couple of threads, or did it trash them all?

 

For me, it messed up a few behind the first few threads. Obviously, I was able to get the tap started so it worked fine. I don't know what it would be like if I had screwed the first threads

 

my guess is you never used a puller point and just screwed the puller into the crank right? second guess is all you need to do is chase the threads. to install a heli coil (7/16-24) you'd need to drill something around a 5/8 or 3/4 holt and tap it. i'd buy a tapered or starting tap and chase the threads and see what that does for you. if that works buy a installer for the dampner so you don't break something else

 

You're absolutely right ede. I'd never done it before, but I learned my lesson. I'll always use the installer tool from here on out - SO easy!

 

Actually, the snout threads are 7/16-20. If you've buggered the threads, you can retap to 1/2-20 without even drilling. Just be very careful to pick up the lead thread and have at it.

 

Yeah that's a brilliant idea. If you can at least get the tap started, give it a try. Definitely the simplest solution.

 

Start with a 1/2-20 plug tap, and finish with a 1/2-20 bottoming tap (if you like). It always works for me - yeah, I've learned the hard way, too.
