Installing Harmonic Balancer & Timing Question

Hey Guys,

Don't want to sound stupid here but I have searched the boards and can't seem to find the answer to my question............so I thought I would ask for some advise

My Harmonic Balancer is going bad, the outer ring is warped and coming away from the plastic seal if you know what I mean. Only noticed this when I recently replaced my Water Pump.

I have checked my Timing which is 8* ('86 305 Tpi with EST disconnected) and everything runs fine.

Before I pull the old balancer off do I have to line any timing marks up..............and when I re-install the new Stock GM Balancer does it simply go back without having to line any timing marks up etc............I suppose the first part of the question answers the second

It appears that the balancer can only be fitted in one position due the slot etc which is why I was wondering about the Timing issues.

Thanks for any help

The balancer only goes on one way. Just make sure you get the correct one for your application.

Thanks for the reply...............I already figured the balancer is a one way fit only but I am concerned about any timing issues.

My Timing is okay and isn't going to be adjusted so just need clarification if there is a specific way to pull the balancer off and then install the new one (which I already have) in relation to any Timing issues.

if it only goes on one way, and you dont mess with anything else, you cant screw anything up.

if the balencer is th right size it doesnt matter. try to gat it clocked right if not line up the two balencers and use a dremel or somthing to score a line at the aproprate position to ajust the time later you will be able to see where you scrached off with the timing light

Just make sure you have the proper remover and installing tool. You shouldnt have to mes with the timing at all. Like mentioned above make sure you get the right balancer for your application.

I kind of dig what he's saying, and really the only two types that come to mind is where the line is straight up, and the one's that are at about 45°.
I would line up the old one at tdc 1 or 6 doesn't matter, and pull it, and compare to the new one. If the tick is one or the other, than you can buy a timing tab to match the new one.

If you just slap it on, and your tdc is no where to be found, than you would need to use a piston stop & degree wheel to get perfect tcd.

like was said get puller and installer, and use a thread protecter point to save the crank threads from damage. if you do a search you'll find a lot of threads about damaged crank threads from the puller screw point trashing the threads.

how do U know if it is the right one for your application. I see many different sizes listed at different parts sources--like Summitt--6"--6 1/4"--6 3/4 "--7"--8".
