83-86 700R4 in an 82 Trans Am Computer problems?
I was wondering if their would be any computer problems if I used a 700R4 in an 82 Trans Am with 200C. I found 2 camaros with em in a junkyard.
Doesn't a 200 have a TCC? There may be an incompatible connector somewhere, but that can be solved. It seems a 700 would be an improvement.
BTW - Is that t'stat a stainless or brass one? Some of those are pretty rare and desireable - especially in Cuba.

I put a 87 700R4 in my 82 Z-28. The tranny elec connector will have an extra pin that the car side of the connector won't have. It's to tell the 87 ECM that the tranny is in 4th gear. Since the 82 ECM isn't looking for a 4th gear signal, the ECM will be happy without that signal. The other 2 pins are for the torque converter clutch and will work normally.
Bottom line, just plug it in. It will work fine.
Be sure to snag the driveshaft from the doner car. You'll also have to make some new holes in the subframe for the crossmember to connect to.
I swapped in the 700R4 and a 9-bolt rear-end at the same time.
I THINK the torque arm is a different length also. Don't remember for sure.
Probably ought to grab it too while your at it.
I have a 200C tranny (with converter) that was working fine when pulled abt a year ago. I'll sell it cheap if you can pick it up.

Older style 700r4's like the one I used from an 82 caprice the plug was identical, course I had to change the tailshaft to use the trans. The tq arm for the 200c is longer and is in the way of the speedo cable so you either need to chop 2 inches off or get a newer one. The crosmember mounts different so you need to do what was mentioned above drill or a couple other options, like making your own or buying an aftermarket one. The 84+ crosmembers are different, I wasted $20 on one.
It is an upgrade well worth the investment.

They said the crossmember would be cut off. And that the driveshaft is probably damaged when they moved the car around with the forklift, but it wouldn't hurt to have it.
Oh and I will need a shorter driveshaft and torque arm, I'm going to check some other junkyards close by next weekend, or maybe during the week.

Having the converter lock at too low a speed (as the earlier factory ECMs are known to do), is a good way to kill your torque converter and cost you more money.

With my 700R4, I just selected Drive (as opposed to OD) around town. It was just like having the 200C tranny again. When I got on the highway I'd shift to OD, watch the RPMs drop, and grin ear-to-ear.
My converter always locked-up too early. Would sometimes stay locked up when I pulled up to a light. Had to manually downshift to break it loose at times. Even with all that, it lived a long, long time (>190K mi. and was still going when I pulled it)
Of course with a stock Cross-Fire, how much stress would it really encounter.
Something else you may want to get while at the boneyard:
A shifter, and maybe a console with the OD position.
I'm still using the 200C shifter. The cable has to be adjusted just right to get fully into Park, and still be able to shift to low gear. However, to shift into first gear, I have to push the button and pull it further back than it was meant to go.
It's a bit awkard, but works. At least until I can be an aftermarket one.

Nice, I was going to ask if I could use the stock shifter.
So it looks like I'll be getting this.
