There's no need to take anything of, to replace the thermostat on a TPI car.
Just use the right tools, and prepare to work in a narrow space!

When we replaced the therm. on my 88 formula... we only had to take off the intake tube going to the TB... everything else was just tight... just go to an auto parts store and find a socket that you can fit in there...

open ended wrench on the front one (between the fuel lines - be careful!) - distributor wrench (of all things) on the rear ... was the easiest way to do it without removing anything but the induction and upper rad hose...

Try using a wrench instead of a socket, and if you have 3 dollars to waste, and you REALLY need to get to the thermostat, you can bench the wrench at just the right angle (use the open end) and it makes it real easy, wrenches fit into places were socets do not

Try a 6" wobble extension. You can put the socket on the bolt, the extension in the ratchet, and halfway put the extension into the socket...
