Occasional irradic idle  w/in..

The car is finally running! Rebuilt Q-jet and purge valve, changed oil (which was LOADED with gas - it reeked and looked like water..)

Drove it from MD to NY yesterday, averaging 23mpg

...anyways it's normal "comfortable" idle speed is around 750 rpm's in Park or Neutral...i think some sensor is telling the ECM to "bump or drop" the idle irradically - it ranges from 500-1500rpms on its own, but only sometimes - other times its fine at 750rpm. I reset the codes yesterday, and after a day of driving it I have no new codes. Any ideas? Thanks! (86 IROC LG4)

Check O2 and MAP sensor... That's your problem I bet.

Did you check the timing. That could do it too?

The oil we drained filled up two 64 ounce bottles, a 2 liter bottle, and I still had about eight more ounces left over.

Yo, Stuart, I symphatize with your frustration.

If I had a clue about working on your problem with the LG4 engine I'd have jumped in with both feet, but I don't. Sorry. Any suggestions I could make would be L98 based.

The last time a couple of us tried to help out with an LG4 problem "Blade" criticized us for being inaccurate. Something like "Don't put up a response unless you're at least 90% sure it's right", or words to that effect.

So I'm guessing that 'caution' is the watch-word now. This could be why responses have been so limited.

There's got to be an LG4 guru around here somewhere to help you out.

Hope you get it solved.

Jake

Mine does the exact same thing very intermittently...it always throws code 34 (too much maf flow) when it does this and seems to do it more often in damp weather. I tried once to replace the maf relays, but pep boys kept telling me they didn't exist and instead of screaming at them i just left. i'll replace the relays soon and maybe that will help. mines an lb9 but maybe this helps

Stuart, I'm in the same position as JakeJr but I had the same problem with my L98. It was a bad ignition control module in the distributor. I don't know if the LG4 has one but if it does it may be the problem.
Good Luck!
