slow cranking

just installed a rebuilt motor (in sig). started and did the 25 min. breakin, ran an additional 30 minutes while setting timing, carb, etc.drove it around for about 20 minutes. The whole time it would start but turned over very slow?
Now it is slow enough to crank that it wont start? I checked for clean grounds, I have the remote solenoid, I checked voltage into it and out of it, cks ok. Battery is charged and cks good at auto zone. Starter cks good at autozone but has a whine (bearing going bad).
I ordered a lt1 starter for a 96 Z28.Will be in tommorrow. Should be an improvement. Could my 10-1 compr. be raising that much hell with my old starter? Or should I ask< How accurate are the part store testers?
I am begging for some ideas if this starter doesnt fix it tommorow. Could this new engine just be tight during breakin?or could my starter be bad even though it cks good?
By the waythe battery in the car is a 575cca, could this be to small, even though it was 70 degrees today?
Thanks in advance for any ideas. You guys have really been a big help over the last several years

Yeah that battery's probably a little small for a 10:1 compression motor. 10:1 isn't a whole lot, but it's not a little either. More than most motors.

I guess that maybe the parts store tester might not be the best piece of equipment, or that your old starter is just getting old.

I would try the new starter and see what happens. Be careful not to mess it up because if that doesn't fix your problem, take it back and say it wouldn't fit!!

Put a slow, trickle charge on your battery the night before you plan to change out your starter.

Good luck.

BTW, I have never encountered a properly assembled motor that caused a slow start problem...I am not speaking of race only engines!!

I would hope that if it was an engine problem it would of showed up sooner (30 min break in @ 2500 rpm)
I have been battling a hot start problem for about 6 months now----the starter i bought rebuilt @ auto zone 5 years ago and the battery is a auto zone special that was bought in nov, 2000. so I would HOPE the starter/battery are getting old and tired and the new engine just did them in

Down here in Flordia, batteries only last 3 years or so anyway. As for a rebuilt starter, 5 years is pretty good.

I think that the new starter will do it. Also check the wiring, make sure nothing got hot...

I plan on deleting the remote solenoid when i install the lt1 starter. Hopefully the new starter being smaller (away from headers) will take care of my hot start problem also.
does anyone know how that lt1 starter compares to the stock starter for a 3rd gen. amp draw---torque produced?

latest update: Just my luck the lt1 starter seized up after 2 days and i have been thru 2 since then that were bad out of the box (so much for advance auto rebuilds) Believe it or not they tried to blame me!!! I had to laugh because the last one i had them check it befor i left the store and it pegged the amp meter on the tester and blew a fuse so Now I am the proud owner of a cvr mini. The lt1 would be a very good upgrade if i bought one brand new from GM. But I liked the 150.00 price tag on the cvr. Lets see over time how this works....so far so good. I do think later on I am going to upgrade the battery
