Its good insurence to replace a timing chain at 80k. It may not be broke yet but you dont want to pay for everything itll break when it breaks. Id go with just a stock replacement part. Double roller wont give you any power gain on a street engine.
I've got 220K and 190K on stock chaings in my various GM cars. Loose? For sure. Worth ripping into the motor to fix them? No way. Do it at your next full rebuild, unless it's gotten so loose that it's jumped a tooth.
I haven't found many chains under about $45 that don't stretch like salt water taffy in only a few thousand miles. This is one area where quality matters.
To give any chain it's best chance at living a long life submerge the chain in oil for 24 hours before installing it. The chain doesn't get much direct lubrication so you want to make sure it's well lubricated in those first few critical engine revolutions.
An even better way is to submerge it in a combination of oil and moly lube and bake it in the oven at 250-300 for a few hours. get your wife's permissions to use an old sauce pan and the oven before you do this or you could have other problems you never even thought of.

What do you think about this summit true roller timing chain:

Would that one be a good one to get? And please post some part numbers on the cloyes timing chain set that would work for my car. I can only find ones for V6 engines.

after gm went to all steel gears i've never replaced one except when i had the engine apart for something else. never heard of one breaking, usually you'll see eratic movement of the timing mark when one wears.

I agree with ede, if you have it apart, dont skimp, replace it. I have my motor out, with only 123,000 miles, and you could play jump rope with it. But if it aint broke, I wouldnt take the time to replace it.

My chain had about 100k on it... when I took the cover off, the chain litterally fell off it was so badly streched.
Got a good double roller on it now.

I had a really old 350 a few years back.. car ran fine mind you.. developed a slight oil leak.. got it on ramps and looked for the leak.. there was a small hole through the side of my timing chain cover.. i pulled it off... that chain had so much slop in it it actually ate a hole through the timing cover.. no idea what the mileage was though.. it was one of those ****ty 350's where they put the nylon over the teeth
weirdest part though i didnt even notice it jumped time..( it was a smogger 350 so it never had proformance anyway..) it didnt even backfire or give any signs of bad timing... lol

Are 1989 305 V8 TBI engines a roller cam? Do I need to get a true roller timing chain? I was told that a single row is stronger than a double row, but a double row is lighter. Do you guys have a part number of the timing chain I need to get? And I'm looking at the brand Cloyes. All I can find on Cloyes are timing chains for V6's. So, I don't know what to get.

The thing about timing chains is, when they skip a tooth, your car don't run. Then you call a tow truck, and they tow it to a garage where you pay top $$ to have a guy fix it.
I consider a timing chain replacement at over 100,000 mi. preventive maintenance, and a good excuse to put a cam and lifters in while you're there.

Check out Jegs I know they carry cloyes.
As for changing the timing gear and chain as preventive maintenance , mine is on its second after market chain set at 140,000.
