I was wondering of anyone could help on this question. I do not wish to relocate the battery to the passenger side spare wheel compartment and am wondering how practical it is to relocate it to the rear drivers side lockable compartment.

I know about the various NHRA rules etc regarding sealed containers, venting to the outside even if you use a sealed battery like an Optima, securing with at least 2, 3/8 diameter bolts (redi-rod). ... etc

Does anyone have any input on this? Any pictures of the installation? Any other ideas etc?

 

use the sealed box and vent it to the outside.

 

Thanks Ede, do you think it'll be possible to do this without completely gutting the interior of that storage area? Is it possible to remove the trim that's inside there and then re-fit it should the battery ever be put back to the stock position?

 

mine sits in the rear well, but there are several people that ahve done it and hid the battery in the side compartments, kenwood is one that comes to mind. i knew he had to make some modifications to the area to make it work but he did it.

 

I have mine in the rear well, with a cutoff switch, with the wire ran up the driveshaft tunel

My battery is set up just like the above post. I'd be happy to answer any questions also. Here is the location of my cutoff switch.

Some tips...

0 Ga. Taylor power wire from summit
4 ga. welding wire to run from alternator post to starter post
use convoluted tubing, careful to avoid exhuast and trans heat
be EXTREMELY careful about chafing-- there is really no fuse unless you run a solenoid. This setup can burn down your vehicle if not done correctly. Check it regularly.
Secure wires with zip ties
Use piece of plate to distribute force of battery bolts in rear well
Use grommets through body
Moroso sealed battery box w/ vent through floor
Solder copper lugs to ends, available at the parts store
I used marine terminals (wing nut/stud) to aid in removal.
Use liquid electric tape on cutoff switch terminals

i really like how you placed your cutoff switch. you wont mind if i somewhat copy that when i move my battery do ya? it looks super clean right there.

 

No, that's fine... that's why I posted it! I cringed at the thought of ruining my bumper cover or my tail lights. At one time, I had the switch in the center tail light...hated it. As far as I know, I've never seen anyone else do it like I have it. It is super clean and nearly hidden to most passers-by. This is good b/c no wise-guy comes and plays with it, making you loose ur radio stations, ecm memory, or whatever. It becomes nearly invisible if you take the lever off of the switch w/ a simple flat head screwdriver. You have to have the off position marked clearly for track use. I had those stickers made from high performance vinyl at the local sign shop. You have to cut away a little of the crash material. Be sure to take out enough or your bumper might bulge and spider your paint.

whats the bennifit of doing this,,,my fuel cell will be located where the charcoal cannister was.....any real advantage?

 

it's taking the weight of the battery from the front of the car to the back. out cars are nose heavy so this helps a little with evening out the weight distribution
