Oil Pump Shaft
well i just borke the tooth of my oil pump shaft. i guess it was weak anyways, since i was just trying to prime my oil system. anyways, what all is involved in changing this shaft out? i am def gonna buy a steel sleeved one. tia

thanks guys, i need to pull the pan anyways to get the tooth that broke off. thanks for the help!!! also, i was just using a homeade tool to prime the oil and was wondering why it wouldnt come up to the heads. it would come out of the oil pressure hole and come out of the dist hole really well. do i need to buy one of those tools to prime it? i just want to make damn sure the whole motor is gettting oiled before i start it. thanks again

If you look at a naked SBC block, you will probably notice that the passage that feeds the right-bank lifters goes RIGHT THROUGH THE MIDDLE of the distributor housing hole; and if you look at a distributor, you'll notice that down near the bottom there are 2 bosses, which more or less seal to the block and complete the passage. Without that, all of this "priming" is useless. That's why there are "priming tools" you can buy. But IMHO it's of questionable value anyway, even in a brand-new motor, as there will be plenty of lube in all the right places if it was built properly.
Here's a pic of a dist with the area in question highlighted.
Incidentally, the oil pump drive shaft part # you want is a Melling IS-55E. It's less than $10 at Auto Zone.

i just wanted to make sure the pump worked correctly, but obviously it is, or oil wouldnt be squirting ou the sending hole. thanks man.

now that i need another oil pan gasket, i have another question. i bought felpro ks2600 gasket kit for my motor, but i just want the oil pan gasket now, wich one do i get? they have 2 diff ones. the difference is thick or thin front seal, i am not sure wich one i have. thanks

its a for a pre 86 2 pc seal block. i dont like the one peice gaskets, do you know wich oil pan gasket they put in the ks-2600 kit?

my summit says 75-79 thick and 57-74 thin. this a target/goodwrench pre 86 2pc block made i mexico, it doesnt say what year it was made. the only things i replaced on the bottom end were the front rubber seal (black) that goes into the bottom of the timing cover and the seal that goes on the rear. the kit had two blue different size bearing seals but i didnt need them. i was just checking the motor out before i put it in my car. i beleive the rubber seals will be fine and i just need the cork gasket that came in the ks2600 kit.

That depends on the oil pan, not the block, and not the timing cover. Blocks and timing covers are all the same in that respect, oil pans changed. You'll need to see what pan you have.
Odds are, if the pan either came on the motor or came with your car, it will use the thick gasket; but that's not definite. You'll have to look to make sure.

the pan was on the motor that i bought, would i just be better off buying another gasket set? at least i will have some spares left over. i dont know how to tell the difference in what i need. thanks man.
