Can you run the L98 heads on a flat tippet cam 350?

I havean opertunity to pick some upfor almost free. I know the L98 had a roller cam. I didin't know if I could interchange the heads on my 350.

Yes. The heads don't care about the cam. There may be other issues like making sure you use the right kind of rockers, but they'll work with either cam design.

It was my understanding that the 85 and 86 L98 had a flat tappet cam from the factory.

Only thing you might run into is the bolt pattern, on 87-up the 4 center intake bolts are at a slightly different angle than earlier chevy engines, and I am pretty sure that includes the goodwrench motor you have. Its easily fixed but just making you aware.

I think the intake bolt difference only applies to iron headed motors. A true L98 is aluminum and has the older pattern anyway.

Right you are, the aluminum heads have the old pattern and centerbolt valve covers.

The heads are off a '90 iroc. What kind of improvemant do you guys think I would get if I just bolted them on?

90 Camaro heads have the 4 differently aligned center intake bolts, so you will have to do a little work to your manifold so you can bolt it up. You will get a compression increase, and I would go ahead and clean up the bowls and port match the heads before you put them on. You will pick up about 1/2 point in compression with the head change, that should help out a little. That cam is pretty weak they put in those, so I'd look into some 1.6 rockers as well if you want a little more power out of it.
The heads you have now have bigger exhaust valves, but I'm not sure how much benefit that is on that engine, havent seen the heads before. The compression increase is probably going to help the most, followed by porting.
