You will be at tdc exhaust stroke with both dots at 12 o'clock. You need to move the cam gear 180 degrees to be at tdc intake stroke.

E,

Actually, you can position the cam sprocket at either 6:00 or 12:00 when installing the timing set. Just move the crank to the #1 TDC position on the compression stroke when installing the distributor. I've always found it a little easier to aling the marks in the 6:00 / 12:00 positions because the marks are closer together.

Now your confusing me with both dots at 12 oclock the distributor should be pointing at 1 cylinder right? if not what one?

i install gear and the chain like vader said. crank gear dot at 12:00 cam gear dot at 6:00, or dot to dot. i too find it easier to line them up if they're dot to dot. after i have the gears and chain on and bolted up i spin the engine untill i have the crank gear at 12:00 and the cam gear at 12:00, or both dots straight up. at this point you can install the distributor with the rotor pointing toi the #1 post on the cap.
