385 fastburn....
I have a friend that is willing to GIVE me one of these.....
http://www.hawksthirdgenparts.com/in...l?v=1&pid=7024
But....it has no heads.
First....what would the cost of heads be for this motor? And where can I get them?
Second...What kind of HP can I get out of it with an 86 Berlinetta?
Third...What kind of other upgrades should I perform before dropping this bad boy in?
Forth....Will my 305 components fit this new motor?

Is he giving you the cam and intake too?
If so, you need a set of vortec heads with upgraded springs or GM perf. aluminum fastburn heads to use that intake. Then it should make 360 hp or so at the flywheel with a decent carb.
If you use your stock heads/cam/intake/carb, it will probably only make 200 - 220hp at the flywheel.

the whole motor is there....only thing it needs is a carb and heads. Where can i get a set of heads for this thing? Can I use the heads off of my 305 and the carb too? Till I can upgrade to better heads and carb.

so...with my 305 heads and the Q-jet off my 305....what kind of HP will I be pushing with this motor? What would a set of vortec's and an upgraded carb push and what would be recommended with that motor?

You can't use the fastburn intake with your stock heads.
You can't use the fastburn 385 cam with your stock heads (unless you upgrade the valve springs).
You CAN use your stock heads/intake/carb, IF you also use your stock cam.
I already guessed your HP output per engine combo in my first reply to this thread.
You can get vortec heads with upgraded springs and fast-burn heads (your choice) from Scoggin Dickey Parts Center (a GM performance parts dealer located in Lubbock, Texas).

What is the difference between these 2 setups...what other stuff would i need to get the motor running....and how much HP out of each?
here's where i found them..

how hard would changing the springs be and how much would it cost? Would it be worth it? It has the fastburn cam in it...so can I still use my intake/heads/carb if i upgrade the springs? I'm trying to get away with the cheapest option here and still get a 385 fastburn block that's mostly built.
Also..on that site...is the price for each head...or a set of 2?

the cheaper option doesn't have the RPM air gap, it has the street legal (ha ha) performer intake. get the air gap option. I would pony up the cash for the heads. while it would be cheaper to upgrade the heeads now, it would be somewaht silly... you'd spend twice that in the long run when you DID want to change heads. you were planning to spend 7-800 bucks on a motor, right? well, snag your buddy's motor, plop down the cash for these heads (option 1) and start there. the only thing you'd want to change, would be the Q-jet.... I'm curious,, is your berlinetta running the stock computer? if you're nmot, you could upgrade the carb a little later. if not, you're gonna need to find out how to eliminate the computer and use an aftermarket carb. the computer controlled Q-jet is not the greatest setup, but it'll do. especially if your motor is built with those heads, that intake, and that fast burn bottom end. good luck, man. you're gonna have a PHAT *** ride.

might as well use the stock one. if you wanna keep emissions, keep the stock computer, and get a chip. the PROM forum will help you there. I'm a dumb *******, and I like carbs, so i know dick about computer stuff in cars..... fuel injection is for the beater. the air gap is a special little number of an intake manifold. it has a built in air gap in between the runners and the lower plenum (?) to allow air to get in and cool the runners... reducing the air temperature of the intake air. it's good stuff, i'd get it with those heads.
