I wouldn't buy anyparts until the motor is torn apart, and completly spec'd out. your best bet would to drop it off at a reputable machine shop and let them take care of part ordering and see what they reccomend to be machined. PAW sells engine kits. 450 isn't a bad price for a complete kit. AS long as it has gaskets, oil pump, all bearings, rings and pistons....

yeah it did have all that
umm well im kinda on a hell of a budget
gonna take me till next month to save up for the kit
i cant afford to get it machined
i checked the cylinders and they dont have a ring grove or anything the 305 only has 90k/miles on it the cam is what went out originaly i just dont want to replace it to have something else go out i want to be very confident in my motors abilities to go on trips and whatnot without breaking down

oh btw the motor is pretty much torn apart in finding the original problem
its on my garage floor right now
and im going to get a motor stand very soon and start cleaning it up
the whole top end of the motor is taken apart and the cam is out
i was going to remove the crank and other parts to see if they had any unusual wear

If you aren't going to bore the cylinders, there's no particular reason to get new pistons.
It would be a good idea to completely disassemble (including removing the cam bearings) and clean out all passages with soapy water & bore brushes. Then break the glaze on the cylinder walls and put it back together with new rings and bearings. So, just get a rering kit with rings, main & rod bearings, and gaskets. You'll have to add cam bearings, but they aren't that expensive.
You really need to understand what caused the cam to fail, though.

On the other hand, since '86 was kind of a "bastard" year, you might need to buy the stuff separately - rings, bearings, seals, and gaskets. At least, I haven't seen kits that covered the 1986 model year because it is unique with newer-style one-piece rear main seal and one-piece oil pan gasket, but older-style perimeter bolt valve covers.

That's the correct location. Might want to recheck those #'s. Sometimes 7's look like 1's, 3's look like 8's, etc.
Although I don't see anything that's really close.

Too bad I don't have a 350 block to build. This is their special this week. $154.99!!! WOW. This is a kit for a 350

Here is the one for a 1985-1986 F-body 305, its a little more expensive than most 305 kits.

On the other hand If you're not boring the cylinders you only need the re-ring kit.
