gears Vs. cam
gears Vs. cam
I have a 91 RS camaro with a 355 in it. is a 2000 stall converter, 700r4 tranny and 3.73 posi a good enough combo to support a cam with a lift of Intake .488 Exhaust .510.Duration at .050 Lift: Intake 234° Exhaust 244° Lobe Separation: 112° Intake Centerline: 107°. the heads are world product the intake is rpm performer. the exaust is headers in to 2.5 all the way back and the carb is a 750cfm performer. If not what would it take for it not to fall on it's face.

What's the .050" duration of the cam, and what else has been done to the motor? Particularly the heads, exhaust, intake and carb.

You need more converter, maybe 2800 or so, and a better exhaust past the headers. Lose the stock stuff.
The cam is pretty big, it's bigger than the one I run in my 400, but will give great top end. That's why the exhaust is inadequate. You already have no bottom end, the motor's strength is up top, open up the flow.

Gold, I have a Comp XR282HR, Comp 1102 1.6 roller rockers, and 3927186 heads with a little work here and there.
ODB, I couldn't have said it better... a cam should be picked according to the intended use of the car, not the other way around. You should start out with a goal of some HP number, or some ET, or some other specific measurable physical quantity, then understand what it takes to get there, then plan accordingly.
It sounds to me like the rest of his combo is reasonably well matched, except for the converter, and the fact that the cam is a step or 2 too big and is set up for nitrous. This combo will have basically zero bottom end but will come on strong at about 4500 or 5000 RPM, and therefore needs to leave at a much higher RPM than any 2000. What do you think?

I'm not builting my motor around the cam. I wanted a motor with around 400HP and 450 ft. pounds of torque. I also wanted a motor that would run strong up to 6500. I also wanted to be able to turn at least low twelve's in the 1/4. Thanks

If you overcam the engine to get your 6500rpm and 400hp numbers then you will add much more work and cost to achieve the low 12 second E.T.'s
Picking a better cam for your combination will save you a lot of time and money. I am trying to help by suggesting this.
Still it is your choice and you can try that cam and see what happens.
I do agree that 2000 is nowhere near enough stall to work well with that cam in a 350. I do not like to use high stalls myself because they are a pain and require slicks to get full benefit. A combo that needs a high stall is a nightmare to drive on the street.
ODB
That's basically a Performer RPM cam, or imitation thereof.
IMO to "FIX" it for his 1/4 goal, he needs:
4.11 or 4.56 gears
2800rpm (or higher) converter
carb tuning
That'll help you leave the line a little better and you'd better have good tires. Once the motor gets going, which won't take long w/4.56's, you'll be on your way.
Have the car chassis dynoed, too, ($50-$100) to see if your combo is working like it should!!! ie, actually making the hp you are trying to make. Probably will need some carb tuning is my point.

Either add more stall or look at the Comp Xtreme XE268, or maaaaybe the XE274. But with the XE274 you will want to step up a little in the stall area.
