Lowering RPM's?
How do I lower my engines RPM rating at higher velocities?
I think it needs a tuning or something, I dunno, I don't know much about engines, but my car does 1500rpm at 50mph and 2000rpm at 60mph and maybe 2100 at 70mph.
In the overdrive gear that is.
Now to compare that to my friends Camaro RS that does 1500rpm's at 70mph.
Why does my car go at such high RPM's

Well you could get larger tires
or like mentioned a numericaly lower gear ratio but theres nothing wrong with spinning 2150 @75 mph. My car use to spin 3100 @75 now with the 5 speed its 2800.

Engine is still new so i dont plan to push itup to 100 yet... my old 305 wouldnt hit 108-110 without breaking 5000, stupid low power thingamabob...

The thing in your dash that has a pointer that moves up and down with engine speed is a trim package, not an instrument. Do not rely on it for an accurate indication of engine RPMs, until you verify it against an actual piece of test equipment.
In addition to being inaccurate even when new, these tachs often fail; and when they do, they almost always read higher than reality. So your engine probably isn't turning as fast as your tach says it is.

Trim package? Whats that? Sounds like something aftermarket, not like any ordinary RPM meter that comes standard with most cars.
What RB83L69 ment is that the rpm guage in many 3rd gens are inaccurate, rendering them as useful as a trim packages at measuring rpm
I have tested mine against an accurate tach, mine is one of the few that are right on the money. hook up another tach to check yours Last edited by 84 Z28 5.0 HO; Mar 23, 2004 at 02:08 PM.

Yea factory guages are an optional trim package, the only 99% accurate guage on our cars is the speedometer for safety reasons. To give an example of how off a factory tach is my tach reads accurate according to an aftermarked tach from 1000-rpm to 4800rpm. Below 1000 its off 150ish rpm above 4800 its reads 1200 rpm lower then actual engine rpm. Dont even want to start on the temp gauge... ahh what the heck, according to my autometer gauge the factory guage reads 20* lower then actual temp.
