10 MPG on newly built 350, what the hell?

I thought I would get a little bit better gas mileage than this. I travel on the highway a lot too, and it isnt much better. I will admit I am a ****ty tuner so maybe thats it. Any suggestions?

Newly rebuilt motors usually get terrible gas mileage and tend to run hot for a period of time, maybe 3-5k miles, before they settle down. The tighter (longer lasting) they're built, the longer it takes.

Some things you can do right away:
  • Run the thinnest synthetic oil you're comfortable with; I use 0W-30 in mine
  • Advance the timing as far as it will go without pinging
  • Experiment with carb jeting. A 750 on a 350 with an intake like that one will run lean. Buy some jets in 2-number increments up and down from the ones you have, and run a tank through it with each size.
  • Keep your foot out of it. Resist the temptation to stretch it out at every opportunity.
  • Put synthetic rear end lube with 2 bottles of posi additive in it, if you haven't already.
You should be able to get close to 18 mpg on the highway with it.

I am assuming like RB is; that your engine is broken in and has a few miles on it. But if it isn't broken in yet, don't use synthetic too soon. I personally like to wait until a couple of thousand miles on regular oil to get the rings seated.

But if the engine is broken in, then do as RB suggests and put thin synthetic in. FYI, I have always ran 5W-30 all year round. And after 170,000 miles, I still don't burn oil. It leaks oil now through the "GollDarn" intake , but it doesn't burn any.

I only have 800 miles on the new motor and I have been giving it hell. I thought that after 500 miles you could give it hell? I am gonna wait before going to sythetic though, because I just wanna make sure the rings seat in good. So you think I am running lean?? You are probably right because I am using my in tank stock pump. White smoke means lean right??? how else can I tell?

your rings may not seat up to 3000 miles.. it depends on a lot of things.

White smoke does not mean lean. It's probably oil.

I will say this ONCE AGAIN
THE EDLEBROCK CAMSHAFT IS TOTAL JUNK !

If anyone disagrees with my call on the camshaft, then I don't want opinions. I want realworld proof. Show me an example of a car that actually runs fast (not 12's, 13's, 14's, or 15's) and gets good drivability, vacuum, and fuel economy... using that junk edlebrock camshaft.

anything less than 15" vacuum or 20 mpg, and I'm not impressed.
*if it's in a 400+ cube engine, then I'm still not impressed.

Is that white smoke or bluish smoke?? If it's blue it's because the rings haven't seated and the oil is getting into the combustion chamber!! ODB is right....it can take up to 3000 miles for your rings to seat properly.....unless of course you had the cylinders torque plate honed, then it shouldn't take that long!!

1986 Trans AM
305 TPI
200,000+ miles (speedo/odometer non-funtional! Odometer reads 142,000)
4 Wheel Discs
9 bolt Borg Warner Rear (2.73's....oh joy) :P
Completely Stock
Soon to upgrade to a 350 converted from TPI to Carb, Edelbrock 750CFM Carb, Edelbrock Performer RPM Intake, Headman Shorty Headers, Some sort of ported heads (undecided), XE268 Cam, Moroso HEI ignition kit with external MSD Blaster II Coil and an MSD 6-AL Box!!
Current project: Keeping my 305 running until I get my income tax returns!

I just had a GM Goodwrench 350 installed, brand new motor, I used my stock q-jet, intake and fuel, pump but have put on headers, kn filter, underdrive pulley
I was getting 14-15 mpg in my 305, but now I am getting 10 mpg, I have only put 200 miles on it so far, have you figured out how to get better milage.

If you really want better gas mileage you should just go buy a new duramax diesel and pull your car around with it. You will get unlimited mileage in the f-bad and weel over 20mpg with the diesel. Sorry had to throw that in.
