its finally time to decide tbi, tpi, or carb.
Ok i'm finally pulling my motor (lo3) out of my car. I got a complete engine out of an 85 iroc 305tpi everything except computer got harness and what not though. My little delima is what type of fuel delievery should i go to. This 305 is gonna be heavily modded. Should i stick with tbi and upgrade to the holly670 about 300 bucks dont need to change really anything but the computer chip. Go to tpi need to get fuel pump, bigger fuel lines and computer, about 400 dollars i guess. Or go to carb which i will need to spend a lot of money anyways but with carb wont it damage my 700r-4. I would really like to hear everyones opinons.

With a 305 you are not going to damage your 700R4. I understand that you are heavily modding it. That's fine but there is a very little chance you will see more than 350 hp out of a NA 305. I suppose you could see more on the bottle But you would need a 200 shot to hurt the R4. IT's good up to about 400 ft/lbs of torque. So go with the fuel delivery system if your choice.
Also **t a shift kit in your trans. or have it rebuilt with some performance parts. You'll thanks me later.

oh no no u misunderstood me. My transmission is beefed up big time i have a 2500 stall convertor in it and a shift kit with a manual valve body. Um i meant switching to carb wouldnt that make the convertor not lock up. I thought it would fry my brand new tranny if i get rid of the computer.

You can wire up a switch to lock it up manually, if that's all you're worried about.
I would absolutely not go back with the TBI. Beyond that, the choice between the TPI and carb will boil down to the usual cost vs. performance vs. legal question. The carb wins the performance vs. cost one hands down, except that you already have the TPI. You'll have to buy an ECM and a fuel pump, so you'll have to be the judge of the costs.

I too have considered the same things. I put a 327 in and kept the 700r-4, and my original intake was allready carb'd. By the end of the summer I had to put a new trany in it. I went w/ the 350 basically because of availabilty and reliability. I dont know what type of HP & Torque curve the new motor has yet but I am pretty sure it was a major culprit. Have you looked into the Holley EFI systems I am almost convined to go this route. TPI is so much more of a pain. Carb and nice and simple but I would like better fuel milage and throtle responce. The edelbrock 650cfm I have not is not the best, I think there is room for improvement.

So, like, sell the Edelbrock (read Carter)
and buy a Holley 650 double pumper or 750 vacuum secondary.

Another consideration: The TPI bolts up to the engine you are modifying, while the TBI would not (speaking of the center two bolts on each side of the manifold). Depending upon your modifications, such as aftermarket heads or carb intake, your choice could correct that issue. Either manifold could be modified to fit either type of head as well.
I've got an LG4 now, just picked up an '87 LB9 dirt cheap, basically with what you got but with ECM and w/o injectors/rails/regulator. I'm going to do the swap, building the engine up over the winter with World 305 heads and cam upgrade. Why? For each 220-240 miles per tank of gas, I spend about 5 miles at the track. I'll do the TPI porting talked about on these boards, AFPR, headers, cat-back, etc. The improved mileage and the fact that I got a great deal make it worth it to me.
Carbs are fine (I'm getting 19-21 mpg even with my trips to the track); I'd like to move ahead.

Not sure if it was said in this post already but about the carb trans killing. You're right about the torque converter not locking up but there is a kit sold by jegs that'll lock it up for you when it's in 4th gear. Another idea is to install a trans cooler, it's extra insurance and a lot easier to spend $40 now than $1400 in a few months. I'd go with TPI if you're keeping the 305 since the TPI system was designed to work very well with the 305. Then again it's an expensive swap with the fuel pump and computer/wiring. It's all up to you. If daily driver then TPI is in, if not then TPI is sold and that money would go to the TBI or carb build up. Car Craft liked the quadra-jet up to 280hp from the LG4 305 and when they swapped to holley it made not even 1 hp difference. If you're going to do more than 300hp with the 305 then I think a carb or TBI is the best way. Carb would require the torque converter lock up but TBI would need a custom chip and larger injectors. It's a toss up really. Depends totally on what YOU want to do, just don't expect the stock 305 TPI system to make lots of power for cheap.
