dot to dot = #1 & #6 TDC but not #1 firing; the instance of #1 TDC where the #1 exhaust is just closing and the #1 intake is just opening; also #6 TDC and #6 firing

both dots at 12:00 = #1 & #6 TDC; #1 firing and #6 valves rocking

Heres my problem. The car was all put togehter timing and everything and everything ran. Well the timing chain was hitting the new cheap chrome cover so I took the chain off to inspect and said ehh damnit what to do now. I lined it up dot to dot. I shoudl have to mess with timing since the dis was in and never moved. right?

Unless its 180 off. Then it wont start. IN which case, you will have to bump the engine over to #1 TDC. Check the valves. If both valves are partially open, bump the distributor to #6.

Im pretty sure thats how it goes. Its late, im tired, im hungry, and i cant think straight.

Without degreeing the cam, dot-to-dot is the correct way to install your camshaft. So if you installed it that way, with some degree of precision, your cam timing is correct.

Now ignition timing is another story, and it never hurts to break out the timing light and check.

If the timing is right, that will serve as a check for your valve-timing because you never removed the camshaft.

dot to dot is the way to do the install so you can see and line things up easy. when it comes to sitting the timing you need to have both dots straight up and #1 at TDC for it to be timed to fire on #1 and then install the distributor with the rotor pointing to the #1 post on the cap.
