Whats wrong with a GM-made HEI? With the right parts in it, it would work as well as anything else, and probably cost a fraction of the what the MSD or Mallory peice would cost.

Agreed. There is no reason to go with an aftermarket distributor unless you are running a crazy high power combo where you need the upmost precise timing. Your 305 will gain nothing from it. You will have a lighter wallet though.

Yeah... The stock one should be fine. Theres no need for the high output aftermarket stuff on an LO3. Just make sure the ignition system is up to snuff.

Your stock one will work fine unless your going over to a carb. In california, though, that will fly like a brick at inspection. Wont get very good results with all those mods to a stock tbi system. Would work fine with (lots of) tuning and might give you a chance at passing smog if they dont catch on to what youve done. Everything except the cam would be good mods to an L03 with tbi.

yup.

and unless yours is broke, why replace it?

you get ZERO gain in power.

Zero gain in reliability.....

total waste of money.

there are guys running in the 9s (and possibly quicker) that use GM distribs.... no reason to swap other then to have somthing shiny and billet to point to.

If you are talking about the older style HEI for a carbed motor, just rebuild an old one. My base distributor is from a 78 skylark. I just cleaned it, replaced the electronic parts and custom set the advance curve. The distributor cost me 20 bucks!
