I wouldnt put much stock in that. It only takes either 60% or 65% to pass the test and someone to sign that you have 2 years of work experience.
As far as the shop is concerned check the machine shop for cleanliness and organization. If possible get a build sheet for your engine.
As far as the mechanics go its a real bonus to see a digital camera in the shop. Shows that theyll take the extra step to make sure everything goes back where it belongs. Same deal goes here too. The techs should be clean and organized. It doesnt do any good to drop dirt down the intake of a fresh rebuild. It also doesnt help to have 8 parts from 5 cars on their toolbench.

how clean is clean though, we're not looking for dust free workplace right? Theres gonna be grease everywhere, but.... how can you tell if its clean, organisation i can understand, but sometimes these shops are just dirty.
I guess i'll check around to make sure tools arn't dirty and that kinda stuff. Make sure they have a mop lieing around in some corners.

The one room youll want to be really clean is the assembly room. Hopefully its a seperate room. Wouldnt want all that metal from the machining process to end up in the engine. Parts should be wiped clean if needed by a clean rag during assembly.
As far as the techs are concerened youll want to make sure they leave any caps on engines untill they need to be removed. The last thing you want to see is a guy getting a new engine and removing all the caps as a first step. Those guys are gonna have dirty tools but the key is to keep all the dirt on the outside. The tools in the assembly area should be much cleaner than the ones out in the garage.

FYI, I have personally toured the Jasper Engine facility in Jasper, IN. It was very impressive with all the dyno tests & hi tech equipment. Unfortunately they still turn out a fair amount of duds. What really counts is how they handle a problem after the sale. Check the local BBB for complaints on this place. If it's a stand up place there will be few, if any.

i called them and they have 3 bad reports over the past 3 years. They said all were handled professionally after reports were filed.

As I recall the previous dialogue, nobody said they thought they were bad. All that was expressed was caution that they weren't a flim-flam operation that looks good to the uninformed but are really rip-off artists. Like saying they'll install a performance 350 and then put in a lame cammed, swirl-port-headed 305.
It's interesting that he typed up a letter like that. The glossy brochure pictures don't prove a lot.
They may be a very good outfit. BBB complaints don't always tell the whole story (baseless claims aren't unheard of). On the other hand, they may have put on their best face when resolving the BBB complaints, too.
I have marvelled for years at people picking up their cars from Maaco and Just Brakes that don't blink an eye pulling out the plastic for an $800 bill that I would have done myself for $75-100 on my own vehicle. Don't kid yourself that the engine rebuild mills don't know that, too.

You should get a detailed parts list of what is going in the engine.
Plus the numbers on the block and the head casting numbers. If it is anthing more than a plain jane stock engine that price will be going up.

Just out of curiosity, whats wrong with the present engine you already have that necessitates that it be replaced? Thats pretty much all theyll do. Replace your current motor with one just like it, or maybe slightly inferior to it.

who said i wanted a performance motor? I want aequivilent to a stock L98. I'll get them to install anohter cam and all will be well for me. That'll be my "performance motor" as you say.
I called them before and they said you can check the casting numbers on all components and that'll prove its the same components as a stock L98. I told you guys that, seems that someone else dont get it though.
And my engine is a wimpy 305, that why i want to change it, a 305 is ****. I consider the 350 the bade for a chevy performance build-up. Thats where i want to begin, it doesn't have to be a performance motor, just in the same condition/tolerances/strength as a stock L98. Thats all i want.

Obviously, nobody that has responded has dealt with this particular company. You've checked BBB, which is good, but apparently don't have anyone else's testimony with regard to doing business with them. Just as obviously, several who have responded have dealt with companies that similarly advertise or know someone who has who has been ripped off.
If they say they'll put together a roller block 350 with 083 heads, your choice of cam, and install it for you, and you're comfortable with that and what they're charging you, then it's your car, your money, your decision.
If you do it, when it's done let us know how it came out, one way or the other.
(FWIW, I could make your "wimpy" 305 turn out as much power as a stock L98 with upgraded cam for about the same or less money than you're going to spend on this 350 - for sure no more than $2432.00. But, that's another matter.)

Okay, one other comment: Since your car is an '86, and you say you want an L98, which started in '87, the first thing they're going to say is your TPI won't fit on the L98's 083 castings. Or, they're going to have to charge you more to make your intake base fit, or find one on the used parts net for which they're going to have to charge you more. Or, they'll say these 882 castings, to which your TPI will bolt right up, are "just as good" as L98 heads.
Something is going to have to give here.

Apparently he didn't recall that portion of the conversation when he wrote the letter.
Like I said, let us know how it comes out.

I think this whole thread has been a waste of bandwidth; after all, this isn't a chat board, it's a tech board. If all you want to do is jabber about the stuff you like to talk about, whether car-related or not, then go to nethirdgen: they have a board over there just for that, and I'm sure the people over there would like you and welcome you and you'd fit right in because they all like to chat too rather than doing stuff. Arguing here accomplishes nothing; and none of what I'm seeing here qualifies as "tech" IMO anyway.
So Kid, go spend your money over there, and see what you get. Come back after it's all over with and tell us what you got, if it's faster than your 305, if you think you got your money's worth, etc. etc. Maybe you will, maybe you won't. Personally I hope you do, FWIW; I don't wish ill on anybody, least of all on an inexperienced impressionable youngster. But nothing that anybody says here will actually change the product they deliver.
Meanwhile, in order to make all this happen, you need to spend more time at work, and less time arguing here. By my calculations you need about 625 hours of take-home to pay that off, and that works out to just about 4 months of 40-hour weeks. Of course, that's just the shop bill; that doesn't count gas, goofing off, or whatever else in the meantime. So you've got a goal now, so go for it. Don't forget, like most shops, they probably have an "easy payment plan" for their work: one "easy payment" and you get your car back. Although, they may have an "even easier payment plan": pay them half when you bring them your car, and pay them the other half when you pick it up. So either way you'll need to have your money ready up front.
Good luck!!!!
