350 has a 4" bore, 305 is around 1/8" smaller, other than that they look the same

If you're asking about the differences between induction systems between the 305 and 350, there are none. The only difference is the injectors and computer..

Am I correct in assuming that you are talking about TPI motors?

If so, then no, they look the same.

The very first place you should look is the VIN number.

If the 8th digit is an “F”, then it’s a 305.

If it’s an “8”, then it’s a 350.

If it’s an “E”, then it’s a 305 throttle body injection.

Assuming the motor wasn't replaced...

If the Vin has the letter F for a 305 and someone tells you its been replaced with a 350 from a corvette, just run and don't worry about the visual details.

Unless you look at the casting number, there is no concrete way of determining whether it is a 350 or 305.

Unless, as stated, it is the original engine.

You could look at your 355 ci Corvette engine in your 87 Iroc for any differences.

No you get the casting number and have a print out of the Mortec list in your back pocket. Works wonders.

you can also write it down on your arm (if you're like me, your hand is to covered in oil/dirt/grease to write anything on) and go home and look it up online.

well actually I found an eaiser way, if you look behind the block by the distrib on the drivers side, it'll tell you the size of the motor.

GM never stamped the engine size on the block (well, they DID, just not there). The area you refered to is where the casting number is as well as the date stamping and what not.

Heh..sounds like the Formula I am buying from a friend.. Originally came with the 305 TPI and had it swapped out for a 350 TPI from a Vette..

17 year old thread

Unless the block has been decked, there's still a partial VIN and a Suffix code stamped in the block at the front of the passenger side head. There will also be a casting number on top of the bellhousing at the back of the block.

Re: Visual differences between 305 tpi and 350 tpi

Can remove 1 valve cover and read the cylinder head casting number.. 081 or 4416 is a 305 motor.
083 or 217 is a L98 350 TPI motor.
