Cluster removal

I recently aquired a 240 km/h 5500 rpm redline cluster to replace my 185 km/h 5000 redline cluster.

I installed the tach yesterday (very easy) but to replace the speedomter the whole cluster will have to come out. The problem was disconnecting the speedo cable.

Any tips? thanks

Pull the dash pad off, and if you look down thru the windshield, yo ucan see the speedo cable pretty easily. Its not hard to remove.

Disconnect the speedo cable from the cruise regulator and push some of it through the firewall. That will give you enough room to pull it out to where you can see it.

I hate work...

I did pull the dash pad- didn't seem to help much- and the speakers in the way but I'll give it another go.

I'll also try disconnecting the speedo cable fromt the cruise regulator.

thanks

Drop the driver's side hush panel, drop the steering column, and reach up from under the dash. That's how I did it.

Very. Two nuts on two studs. Remove them and the column will drop about 4-6 inches, and you'll have the room to reach under there unless you have forearms like Popeye.

No electric speedos in Camaros until 1990.
Firebird boys got em in 86.

And what's with the 87-1LE thing??? Officially the 1LE was released on 89, and I know there were a few (Very few) 88 1LE cars made (I have seen one) but I have NEVER heard of an 87 - What's the deal???

Hey! another Canadian! cool.

Just a made-up user name. Like I think there is an IROC SS guy on the board.

My old 87 IROC-Z was an ex Players race car.
No power options, just 305/5 spd. It hauled Just my way to comemerate it. I'm sure if it was an 88 (or more likely 89) it would've been a 1LE.

Cool, so do you still have the car? If so does it still have the players engine?

Uh oh - this is starting to stray from the "Technical" discussion that was started. We are gonna get STOMPED!!

Ahh... I see now, I didn't notice that it was a Camaro. Also 86, I think you mean you have the ELECTRONIC dash, the digital dash I believe came out in 88 on the GTAs.

The tricky part of removing that cluster is removing the speedo cable. There is a small metal tab that you have to press to release the speedo cable from the back of the cluster.

Actually,no,i mean my car has a digital dash exactly like the GTA does,I have a 305 TPI Trans Am,and it is rarefrom what i heard, but i beleive it was a test car to see how the digital dash would sell in those cars,im not sure exactly what the deal is or how many they made, but i do know that some 86 Trans Ams came with the digital dash, and even some came with cheesy lookin 15 inch wannabe GTA rims like mine did. Here a link to check out my car,if you want a better look at the rims let me know.

My '86 didn't have the cruise govenor (called regulator above). Cable went straight from the tranny to the speedo. I'd assume the '87s were the same.

But, anyway, once you can get your finger on that tab, it'll come right off.

Maybe this will "flame" it? hehe
Thanks for all the input I got One way or
another I'm sure it will work.

I dropped off the speedometer at MR Speedomter where they turned back the milage to match my current reading.

Saturdays the big day. I know it's not an exciting power adding mod but it means something to me- and I'm just doing what Chevy should've done in the first place.
Oh yeah...it was pretty cheap and I can do it myself- pretty amazing
