You DON'T line up all the rings. Read the instructions that came with them, they will tell you where to put the end gaps.

You need a tool called, appropriately enough, a "ring compressor".

http://www.sears.com/sr/javasr/produ...id=00904716000 for example

DO NOT line them up and DO NOT put them on the thrust faces of the piston either.
What kind of a compressor do you have?, There's the clamp kind that goes around and you squeeze it like a pair of pliars. There's the kind that clamps around and then you tighten an allen, then there's the really trick kind that's just a taperred hole that matches the bore size. There are probably others.
When you get the piston gaps where they need to be (a lot of theories here, do what the ring MFG says if you're not sure) Clean the heck out of the bore, oil both the bore and the ring compressor, line the piston/rod assembly up, put some tubing or something on the rod bolts so you can guide them and won't ding the crank, Put the compressed P/R assembly on the top of the bore, line it up and tap (sometimes a large tap) it in. I use a plastic hammer, some guys use the wooden hammer handle, whatever works for them. If you feel something weird STOP, pull it all out and look it over.

You may have .005" over rings. Remove all of the rings from one of your pistons. Holding one of the compression rings vertical slide it into the bore for about an inch then rotate the ring down into the bore. Turn the piston upside down and slide it into the bore to square the ring with the cyl. wall and using a feeler gauge measure the ring end gap. If the ring will not go into the bore very carefully file the ends until you get the right gap. Use .004" for every inch of bore as a general rule of thumb. .004 x 4.0 = .016"
