need help buidling a motor

well i want to build a motor that puts out around 400 hp and is good street/strip motor
im getting a good 4 bolt main block and i am thinking about getting an eagle 383 stroker rotating assembly then to make everything simpler i would get a holley systemax 2 kit that includes heads, intake, cam, timming set and pushrods
well the questions i have are will this work good together to make an awsome motor and which pistons to get with the rotating assembly to get the best compression ratio with the holley heads to run pump gas
here are the links to the parts on jegs

yea i know what your saying a 350 would be easier but i only have the block and nothing else so i need to build an entire short block so i might as well make it a stroker
like they say there is no replacement for displacement

When I pulled the 350 out of my Camaro I too wanted to stroke it to a 383. I spoke to numerous people, including two engine machinists. They both told me that although a 383 makes a ton of torque and horsepower, a 383 isn't going to last nearly as long as a 350. I forget the exactly what they told me, but it had to do with the balancing of the rotating assembly (crank/pistons) and the way that the vibration was transferred throughout the engine. In short, they said, a 383 would last maybe half as long as a 350.

I can't vouch for it personally, but what they said makes sense. There are lots of guys that probably run 383s with no problems, but I'd stay away from them... are you putting this in a Jeep?

I have a '95 YJ that I'm swapping a 350 into. TBI, L98 heads, and a decent camshaft. I'm expecting between 250-300 horsepower, once it's properly tuned via the EPROM. More than enough power for that suicide ride.

no im gonna put that motor in a 87 iroc to have some fun with
the reason my name is jeep guy is because what i drive right know is a jeep cherokee with a 5.5 inch lift and 33 inch tires

know i can understand what your saying about a 383 not being balanced if it were useing a crank straight from a 400 sb but if i get the eagle rotating assembly wouldnt that take care of the problem

also what do you think about the holley systemax kit with the heads does that make good power for the money and are holley heads any good because i really never heard anything about holley heads

That's a good point about the Eagle system; it may just come properly balanced.

I don't have any experience with the Holley kit, but those kits are sold that way for a reason... they're designed to work together correctly. It may not make as much power as possible, but I'm sure that it would work. As for 400+ hp, I'd try contacting Holley and see what it's rated at.

Dont get discouraged on building the 383. To put things in perspective take a look at the chevy small block 400. Although in its early years it had overheating and head cracking issues due to thin cylinder walls but you still see many hard towing trucks still running with over 100,000 miles on them. The short rod length was also a weakness since it created a bad angle on the rotating assembly and would tend to twist rods if over revved. Now a 383 shares the same crank stroke of the 400 but has a smaller bore so that should put things in better perspective. Between the better aftermarket parts than the stock 400 as well as moving up to longer rods you will improve longevity. I think you would be able to achieve similar longevity as an average stock 350 if you have the rotating assembly balanced and limit the rpms so you dont blow it apart. If you decide to buy better parts than you listed then expect it to last longer. I think the 383 would be able to last a good long time if its well maintaned so dont believe its some kind of engine thats going to blow up soon after 1,000 miles.

I would defenelty go with the 383 youll easily make a 400hp with that kit and a 383. I think the holley kit is a very good kit. I wouldnt buy any of the parts in it seperately but it looks like a good Combo. Also for pistons just try and get some that will give you around 10:2-10:5 compression with there 66cc heads. Good Luck man.Oh and dont forget to build the rest of the car for the engine. Your going to need around a 2500 stall and around 3.73 gears and a built suspension to get that thing movin like it should. Have fun.

well it ends up the block is gonna be a 4 bolt main block but it is the one piece rear main seal from 87 and up and i can get the rotating assembly that i wanted for that block but im not sure about the holley systemax kit it says it is for 86 and older blocks now the question i have is if it will still work and if it doesnt why doesnt it would it be something with the cam or what is the problem

The Holley stuff will work. The '87 block should come with provisions for roller lifter cam, but the older stuff will fit in it.

You might want to check with Holley to find out if there are any problems with clearance using their cam in a stroker.

Personally, if I had a roller block, I'd stick with a roller cam. But, that's just me (and a certain racer I know with a huffed 383).

plans changing again
i get the crank with the blockand if im not mistaken it could be a forged crank
did heavy duty motors come with a forged crank stock or am i totally wrong
but anyway if it does i think i will use that crank so no more stroker
and yea i think i will use a roller cam
so now it looks like im gonna build a totally different motor hopefully get the same hp just a little differently
but since every thing is in the planning stages im not really sure what im gonna do
thanks for all the imput
