MAF sensor, can you run without it?
what would happen if I ran my car without a MAF sensor?
Did a search and found nothing that could really answer my question.

Why in the world would you want to?!? It's stupid. You'd run really rich (IIRC safety mode is rich) and really crappy as compared to a correctly tuned motor. Probably ruin the O2 and EGR off the top of my head.

I'm no expert but no MAF would probably be the exact same as a faulty MAF that didnt work lol.... I'm assuming that you could, but it would make it run speed-density ( I believe?). Again, I'm no expert... I dont even have a TPI engine lol... why dont you go give it a try? heh.

Wow, I can convert my MAF car to a speed density just by unplugging my MAF? Holy crap bat-man. I have got to go over to the Prom board and let them in on that little secret.
Do I get a magically appearing MAP sensor everytime I unplug my MAF?

hehe, thanks for the info, my MAF sensor is bad, and I was wondering if it was a good idea to drive without it connected, but since its not, I wont. Thanks again.

No worries. I always have fun.
This time it happened at your expense.
Without research I would doubt the veraciousness of that info.

Without research I would doubt the veraciousness of that info. Yes, the car will run and drive like that. Check engine light will be on solid for obvious reasons. There is no MAP sensor for the ECM to fall back on in TPI engines equipped with a MAF sensor. It just has RPM and TPS and CTS to run the engine.... which ain't much.
YES, doing this CAN be used as a diagnostic test to check for a "flaky" MAF. I've done it several times on different cars. If you unplug it and the car suddenly runs better (or at all) chances are the MAF is bad. This has proven particularly useful when I have encountered engines that start but die immediately after startup. That's classic bad MAF symptoms, although they can fail in other ways.
Another "low buck" MAF test is to idle the engine and lightly tap the MAF with the handle of a screwdriver. If something's loose inside it, or giving an intermittent connection, the idle will immediately stumble or stall outright.

I ran for Six months with the Maf disconected (bent pin not making conection) the SES light was on. The car ran good as always (strong) started and idled normal and the gas mileage did not change either. The ECM was making the changes. So to answere the question, yes you can run without the Maf. I have since found the bent pin problem and corrected it (no SES light) and everthing is the same.

never thought of checking anything else honestly, I plug in the MAF sensor and the car stalls out as soon as I start it and it comes to an idle, I unplug it and it starts right up, which makes me think the MAF is bad, I can check the relays, would they be in my Haynes book?
