starter engages but does not crank
starter engages but does not crank
heres the problem guys. the car is a 86 iroc with a 79 350 and an 86 700r4 trans with a stock converter. i pulled the engine and put a new 700r4 on the motor but i didn't change the converter only the trans. when i was installing the bellhouseing to the motor every thing went very smooth and the trans seatd all the way for me. i now have the motor and trans back in the car everything is hooked up correctly but when it is time to start the car the starter will engage but it will not turn the motor. i tried hooking a battery charger to the car set on the engine start setting 100 amps and still nothing. i also bech tested the starter and it operated correctly. is there any possibility that the motor could be bound. thanks for any help guys this one really has me stumped.

When you put the converter in did you make sure it went all the way in the pump in the trans you can usually feel it drop about 3 times when pressing against the torque converter while spinning it. I hope you are lucky and didnot bust the pump up. GOOOD LUCKKK

The converter should have been removed from the flywheel and installed in the other trans because it has to line up with the input shaft and the pump you have to spin the converter to get it to line up with the input shaft and pump so the converter will engauge into the pump if you havenot done this than the reason the starter willnot turn the motor is the converter is jammed, you are going to have to loosen all the trans bolts to the motor. take the three torque converter bolts out and if there is enought clearance and you are LUCKY and didnot damage anything already spin the converter and hope like hell it goes into the trans if it doesnot remove trans pull the converter check for damage to the pump and converter hope this helps.
Also if the trans you removed had internal damage you should replace the converter and flush the lines.

i never took the old converter off i just installed the new trans into the old conveter.
Take the trans back out, take the converter off, and put it into the trans the right way, and make sure it will still go in; then put the trans AND CONVERTER back into the motor. With luck, you didn't destroy the front pump. But, don't bet on it; mentally prepare yourself for buying a new one, because most likely, it's smoked.
Man!!! the last thing i wanted to do was pull that ,motor and trans agian especially now that i have all the bolts on the underside of the car back in. but ow well should have done it right the first time.
damn shortcuts!!! luckily i have a spare converter layin around Matt
