VATS retrofit.

if someone offered you a VATS retrofit kit that was easy to install, and didnt require EFI, would you buy it?
projected cost is around $100.

it would include a underdash box, new ignition cyl with VATS key, wiring and instructions.

it would disable ignition hot, (to the coil) and the starter.

optional would be a light coming on.. like to illuminate the security light..

edit:
also in the case of EFI, it would not power the ECM

i donno yet..

i have yet to price VATS lock cyls.. but probly new lock cyls.

bascily, im swapping to a aftermarket ECM, so i made a pesudo VATS module for myself. but knowing how damn effective it is, id like to be able to share it with everyone..

i figure the lock cyl is $50. i have to look into it more.. then theres the cost of the parts, plus some money to keep me intrested in using my time to make them, plus shipping.
so it should be just under $100.
athough $50 of that would be slashed off right away if you HAD vats but converted to carb or aftermarket EFI.

You will need to provide a new collar for the steering column (from a VATS vehicle). There is additional clearancing in the lock cylinder opening to clear the VATS wiring.. I ran into this recently. You can't put a VATS cylinder into a non-VATS steering column collar piece, it just won't work...

damn... that makes it even more work.

well, as soon as i get mine installed, i'll see about doing others.

its pretty simple. when the ignition is turned on, it looks at teh keys resistance.
if its within range, it flicks on some relays. (coil, ECM and starter)
if its out of range, the light comes on and stays on for a adjustible amount of time. mines currently 7 seconds.

as long as that light is on, even the proper key wont start it. after im positive it works great, i'll change the time to somthing longer.

the other benifit to this is my coil wire. since its coming on thru a heavy duty relay, i can run a thick wire direct from either the battery or the alternator to the coil.
