Edelbrock Heads

Does anyone run Edelbrock Performer or Performer RPM heads? How do u like them, would it be better go with a Dart Iron eagle or the world equivalent? The only thing i see is that they only have a 170cc intake runner while dart and world u can get 200cc.
I have a 600 carb, performer intake a cam with 234/234 duration and 488/488 lift @ .050

We have tried these heads on a few motors. They are a great "cheap" head. They seem to work well on the 350 and 406 motors we used them on. Not the greatest head but decent. We have not pushed them past 5500 as we were using tpi set ups. The small runners gave them great velocity. Nice throttle response! Decent et's. I suspect you will probably want the darts for your application though. Hopefully others will chime in and give a few more opinions.

Just the other day My brothers neighbor bought a 69 chevelle with a 350 in it. Had the edelbrock RPM heads, solid roller, aluminum roller rockers, the best of the best. It was putting out right at 500 at the flywheel. They are good enough heads, if the rest of the combo is right.

The head itself is OK. It's better than stock. The downfall in my view are the components. I'm not a fan of edebrock valve springs.

First, I don't post much here but I have learned a lot from what others have done here so thanks to everyone for sharing. This site is just as awesome as the others. Keep it up!

I went through a similar evaluation process with my 84 Vette. The choice was Edel Performers (170's with 64cc chambers), Trick Flows 23* (195's, 64 cc chambers) and AFRs (180's, 68cc chambers). I evaluated them based on engine sim's (perf trends and desktop dyno). I also take both software packages with a grain of salt because at the end of the day what really matters is when the rubber hits the road - literally in this case.

I am not bashing anyones products just presenting my findings and my thought processes ( as twisted as it may be ).

No matter what cam was selected my findings were.

Cams
L79 (older 327/350 hp)
Summit 1105
Crane Powermax 2050

AFR on top
Trick Flows 2nd
Edel Performers 3rd

I am not posting the numbers because I take them with a grain of salt I just used them as indicators. FWIW - I also read, researched, asked questions etc etc etc.

Please keep in mind this was with the engine sim's. Based on what my plans are (present and future) I selected the AFR 180's. I started checking price the Edels are about $1100 ($550ish each), the TF's $1200ish, AFR's $1275. As you can see there really is not that much price differental between the Edel's and AFR's - $175.

Engine simulators are garbage. Nothing but a rough estimate. (which you said, I am not bashing you ) As far as when the rubber hits the pavement, if you look above, there is a real world test. 500 hp and about equal torque, out of a 350. Of course, thats with a huge solid roller, etc.

You should update your prices too, you can pick up the edelbrocks assembled for 995 a pair from summit, even cheaper if you look around.

No offense taken. I agree the sims are dubious at best. I just did a quick check at summit and the price ranged from $489 each ($978 pair) to $579 each ($1158 pair).

I'm going to put a set of 70cc chamber angle plug Edelbrocks on a 406 I'm building.

I got them with about 3000 miles on them for $500 off a guy who was building a stroker and had already ordered a set of Pro Action 220cc heads and he needed the money.

I think my $500 was money well spent!

Yes, were I buying new I would have looked into Trick Flow and AFR- but I can tell you from the experience of a couple people I know you will wait......wait.......wait.......for AFR's. Like 8 weeks lead time.

I haven't met anyone yet who DIDN'T like the Edelbrocks, just that there are better flowing heads out there for a few more bucks.

Eric

I've got some Edelbrock RPM heads. Had them for some years. At the time they were one of the few affordable Aluminium heads.

While the Port design and runner shape appear to be quite good ( and independant Dyno tests back that up ), the hardware on them sucks. Poor valve springs and cheap generic screw-in studs ( not even spot faced on top for Poly-Locks ). After repacling the valve springs ( Isky ), Guide plates ( Isky adjustable ) and studs ( 7\16" ARP ) they are now what I call decent.

If I bought some street heads today I would either choose AFR or Holley. The Holley 23 degree aluminium heads have very nice hardware ( ARP studs and true dual valve springs ) and the port shapes and combustion chamber look very good.

Anytime you can get a good deal it is a good thing. Heck if I was presented with that deal for the Edels I would have probably gone for it. I am not thrilled about the wait but I have more time than money.
