car wants to start just some times
Well this is some what similar to the problem I had with my 305 that my car would sometimes not start when hot or just not start at all, and then would have to beat on the starter with a tire iron. But now I have a new engine (350 TPI), new alt. from the 305 (about 5 months of use), a newer starter that I got with the new engine, and an optima red top. The problem is it does not start some times when hot, but most of all I have to try a few times even when cold. When I try to start it when cold you can here the starter ingage and then disingage ( sounds like a tick- toc noise). What can this mean? So I am thinking that it might be the starter since it has a little trouble to start to begin with. So I am not really sure what to do here. And this keeps me from driving some where far when I know my car will not sit for a long time.
Thanks in advance
Kevin

bet you don't have a "new" starter. try getting a new, or bigger (actually smaller size) and i bet your problem goes away. you might want to make sure all the connections are clean but i bet that isn't the problem.

Yes, get a mini-starter, and make sure you have very good terminal connections. Also make sure you have a large ground wire directly from the N- battery terminal to the engine block.
The problem is the starter and solenoid get heat soaked and their resistance goes incredibly high.

i had the same problem after tranny install. i removed converter cover and coil wire and watched starter while wife turned key. the gear was hitting the flexplate about half the time. bought some starter shims and after a lot of trying finally found the right combo. look to see if it is this before going through all the wiring.

Well I did buy a Mini starter about a year and a half ago, but the jerk who I bought it off on Ebay swrewed me out of $80. It just seems now matter what it is with my cars the starters or the starting process is messed up.
BTW thank you everyone for you imput.

Get the motor tested at a autoparts shop or dealer (autozone, SCK...). I still bet its your connections.
