Running rich, White/blue smoke

When I start my car up after it has been sitting for a while, it will chug a bit of white/blue smoke. My dad thinks its valve guides, but i think its something different. My car runs rich after i tuned it up and adjusted my timing which helped, but my choke plate always stays open. I bought a choke thermostat and havent put the new one in because i cant figure out why the plate wont close. Is there a certain position the choke thermostat be set at? Also, since my car hasnt had a choke (i took it off to replace it with the new one but havent put the new one on), the check engine light hasnt been plauging me, nor has the choke light. Since i have the emissions test coming soon, i wanna make sure i have the basic stuff changed to lean it out, hopefully this info is enough to diagnose the problem. Thanks

Rich smoke = black smoke. It sounds like your dad is right, your valve guides/seals probably are worn. Mine smokes a little in the morning after letting it sit overnight.
