91 formula in need of cam

I'm rebuilding the upper half of my no ***** 305,so far I've got a tpi unit and am thinking of 350 heads but I dont what is a good cam for this build.I'm not looking for some radical hp gain but just a good lobing idle and some fun to and from work. Any advice would be appreciated.

since youre switching to tpi, im going to assume that you have tbi now? if so, those are probably the worst casting heads. Do a search for Sitting Bull or F-Bird'88. Theyve posted lots of good info on porting stock heads, but you would still want to ditch yours. Is the TPI stock, or any work done?

the 350 heads will lower your compression ratio, and thus defeat any power gains that could have been gained by better flow.

You should find some LG4, or 305 TPI heads and port and polish them yourself. That will net you a lot more gains than the 350 heads.

Sellman is correct regarding the combustion chambers. 350 heads will either be 64cc or a gastly 76cc. Your 305 heads are cast as 58cc. I would keep them. Look up Sitting Bull, he's got a great thread linked in his sig. There are several other threads and various online sources flying about that also cover head modifications. I would take them in to the shop, have them cleaned up. I cut my heads (which are on a 305) for 1.96" intake valves and left the exhaust valves alone. Port and polish per directions and suggestions floating around. Depending on what cam you select, you may or may not want/need to mill the guide bosses down for clearance. Keep in mind, factory heads start to run into guide boss-retainer clearance issues at around .460-.480" of valve lift.

For a bare minimum and ease of tuning, I would look into the LT1 cam. There are several 305 TPI/TBI people out there that have success with this cam (be certain it is the f-body LT1 cam). Otherwise, Comp Cams, Crane, etc, all make computer controlled grinds. However, due to engine size and TPI, and lack of info on the car, I would still stay small. If you want a Comp grind, take a peek and look at the RPM ranges and what not. Keep in mind the lift issues. Also remember, to get the most out of any cam, tuning is needed. The more cam you use, the more tuning is needed to make it run.

now i"m really screwed,One person says 350heads another says use the stock.I'm thinking of just having them worked but again dont know much about the technicles about heads and cams all together.I've decided on a comp cams 262/264 450/480 cam
and now need heads to match them. The tpi is stock off a 90 camaro.

ask the guy if you can have the heads off his camaro too, those heads will help you out tremendously. Just say no to swirl ports

What year is this 305? What heads are the 350 heads from? For ease of installation, I would find some "081" castings. Those are the latter year 305 TPI heads. That way, the intake bolt angles are correct (no need to go re-angling the center 2 bolt holes on each side, granted, that's not very hard to do). They are pretty much the same as the "416" and "601" castings as far as ports, valves, and chambers are concerned. The only differences really are the provisions on it (intake, rocker arms, valve covers).
