HELP NEEDED!! LEAKING OIL!
HELP NEEDED!! LEAKING OIL!
I just got my car back a few weeks ago from the shop. I got a ZZ4 engine install, exhaust and suspension. The car has been burning/leaking oil since I got it back. Took it back to them and they said its the seal between the engine and the tranny (I think its called the rear main seal). They said I would be best living with it for now until the winter when I get the 383 stroker kit installed. However over one day it has burned A LOT of oil. So I think I am going to want to get it replaced real soon. My question is shouldn't they have replaced this seal when they installed the engine?

Are you Saying you Got a new ZZ4 crate Installed, and It leaks at the Rear main ?
When You say it is leaking oil, Is it puddleing up when You Park ?
When you say It is burning, Is it coming OUT the exhuast, or merely burning off the hot Pipe that it Drips Onto ?
Either way, Seems to me that if you HAD it installed, and it was a new CRATE ZZ4 from GM, then None of these are your problems to worry about, and Either GM or The shop that did your install Is responsible for the Job.
If it is Indeed the rearmain, The Ball Is in GM's court.
Unless of course, someone voided warranty and monkied around with it. In that Case I would look to the shop, Since you had them Do the work.
Something else that Comes to mind, when they did the install, What Induction Did they use? Is your Iroc a TPI model ?
If So, when they swapped intake's, It is possible that your rear china wall is leaking, Wich can Be easily confused with a rear main seal leak, because it all drips out in the same Place.
Again, Thats teh Shops responsibility, and yet another reason To Do it yourself Next time
Get back with Some more specifics, and we can work from there.

I've got the same problem, there is oil on the underside of my car, and every now and then some will drip down onto the exhuast. Since I have a warranty to, would it be possible to return the motor since I have the money for a ZZ4, or will they only do repairs?

It isn't a brand new ZZ4 it is modified and was in a 88 vette before. What the shop did was take it out of the vette and put it in my car. As for intake and all the specs just check out:

It isn't leaving pulldes or bunring out the exhaust it just drips onto the exhaust and burns off while I am driving. It isn't a major leak but none the less it still does leak and require me to add oil every week or sooner.

It is possible that maybe you have a valve cover gasket leak near the rear of the valve cover, just something to check.

Take off the inspection cover at the front of the bellhousing to see if it's leaking from behind the flexplate. If so, it's the rear main seal. If not, it's from a valve cover.

Replacing the rear main seal can be done with the engine in the car PROVIDED you can drop the oil pan.
If you're running a two piece rear main seal, the job is a LOT easier since the trans doesn't have to be touched.
Drop the pan, remove the oil pump, windage tray and rear main cap. Tap out the old seal and in with a new one.
Caution is needed here because the new seal has to be well oiled and installed in the correct orientation. There's also a simple tool that will prevent the new seal from being shaved as it's being installed.
Off-setting the new seal from the rear main cap parting line helps prevent future leaks too.
A one piece seal requires removing some other stuff (flexplate/flywheel, etc.) to get at it.
Swapping engines from one car to another doesn't involve anything to do with the rear main seal though.
If it's leaking now, it may have been leaking before the installation. However, clutch cars put more load on the rear main since it takes the thrust. So if the engine was in front an automatic before and is now in front of a manual, that could be the difference.
In my 86 Vette I can have all the stuff off in about half an hour, but "F" bodies may have different clearance problems to deal with.
Hope this helps.

You will never get the oilpan out the bottom of a Fbody, short of a Oxy torch...
Check your rear China wall, Sounds like that TO me.
If they pulled a Zz4 out of a Corvette and installed your TPI, then there is a strong possibilty that they ***** it up.
could also be the valve covers.
Basically, Just look for the damn oil

I know FOR SURE its the rear main seal.. I think I am going to try to replace it at my friends house so it will just cost me the seal and a bit of time.
