91RS still detonating.....

Ok, this car has been detonating for probably six months now. I changed the O2 sensor, replaced the splitfire plugs with normal ones, put the car on a scanner, and nothing works. I can't figure out what the hell is wrong with it. I was getting a code 42 a few weeks ago. Also, once I changed the plugs, the car ran wonderfully for about 20 miles or so, then started knocking again. That makes me think that the computer is getting a signal that is making it run like that. Any ideas?

Replace the knock sensor, and the pick up coil, and maybe the Mass Air Flow sensor, try a higher octan fuel, and first and for most check the timing. I will check up on that code 42 for you and get back to you.

I've already checked the timing, I've tried the higher octane gas. I thought about replacing the knock sensor, but when I put it on the scanner, it was detecting a knock, so I figured that the sensor is working.

OK code 42 is the answer, your ELECTRONIC SPARK TIMING (EST) CIRCUIT is ****ed I would get a new ignition module, the one under the cap and then I would also replace the pick up coil (((the pick up coil "under the cap too" is what frys the igition moduale because it goes to ground))) and rotor&cap while your at it if you haven't already. That should fix the problem. Yes you are right the knock sensor is working right. Something that I did on my 1992 Camaro, I got the MSD main ignition coil from summit that fits in place of the stock GM coil, best thing I ever did, becasue the GM main ignition coils kept failing on me. Make sure you reset the timing (don't forget to disconnect the white wire) after you take out the distributor to install the new pick up coil, finally disconnect the battery to clear ALL CODES after setting the timing.

Good LUCK!!!!
I worked for a month on my ignigtion system before I got it all worked out.

By the way, don't ever use splitfire plugs again, they will set more codes then what you know what to do with and the cost a lot more but they don't do anything, ALWAYS USE OEM replacement AC DELCO plugs with the proper heat range for your climate and always check the gap even though they come pre gapped.

Yeah, I replaced the splitfires with AC Delcos. I thought about replacing the ignition module, so maybe I should go ahead and do that.

Well Bort62 splitfire spark plugs have a problem of setting up two flame fronts in a cylinder thus causing knocks which the computer has to compansate for and if it can't it will set a code other wise the piston won't last, and when it retards the timming IT HURTS PERFORMANCE, the only reason people think they are helping is becasue they are comparing performance to THE OLD spark plugs they just took out, YOU DON"T have to be a Rocket Scienctest, just look at NASCAR RACEING, they want the same thing we do, MAX MPG VS. MAX HP and do they use stupid splitfire plugs NO!!!!!!!! Because they know that their engines won't last for 500 mile race with that crap of having 2 or more flame fronts crashing into each other causing a harmful ping. And don't get me started on K&N filters, those alow more air into an engine BUT MORE DIRT TOO, Does NASCAR use them NO!!!!!!!! because they know that dirt is BAD FOR AN ENGINE!!!

Stick with OEM replacement parts, other wise your asking for trouble.

First off, this stuff about two flame fronts crashing into each other is nonsense. Doesn't happen. The electricity will take the path of least resistance. Can this change as the plug wears? Sure. Does it fire two sparks at the same time? Hell no. Best case scenario is that the two electrodes wear somewhat evenly because the spark will change which electrode it uses as the gap changes.

As someone on TV once said, "You cannae change the laws of physics."

Comparing to NASCAR is worthless anyway. Those guys do NOT have the same priorities as we do.
