Why Wont my car die when I shut it off???

After running my camaro which is carbed it is a daily driver that I picked up a while back just to mess with but it has always run good but it keeps wanting to run when I shut it off. What causes this and what can be done to correct it. As far as I know this car is a stock 305 carbed.
Thanks

dang it, I just talked to a mechanic at work about this same question, and of course I forget the answer! Until then rev your engine slightly right before you turn it off, that will work, but I don't think its that great for the car.

This is called deisling. My old s-10 did it. Just shut it off in drive if it happens all the time then get it checked out. but if it is every now and then don't worry about it

Suggest you check base timing first. High combustion chambers temps (from vac leaks, or high coolant temps" can aid in "deiseling".

Fuel leaking from carb into the intake as well.

Set the timing to spec, check for vac leaks all over the vac lines, then maybe decarbonize the topend with GM Topend cleaner.

Somthing in the combustion chamber that is hot enough to ignite the left over fuel is causing the run-on. Could be red hot glowing piece of carbon, or an over heated exhuast valve. You are going to want to check the timing first. If the timing is correct, make a couple of WOT take offs and redline shifting to burn out the carbon. Also try a better grade/octane fuel.

I used to have a dieseling problem on my cutlass. Although the best solution would probably be to pull the heads and scrape all the carbon out, I found that if you kill the ignition with the car in drive, it'll quit dieseling a lot sooner than if it were in park. Of course, this only applies to auto tranny cars

You have too much carbon buildup in your combustion chambers. This is typical of high mileage carb engines. You could either shut the car off in drive or use premium fuel. Remember that higher octane fuel is not as volatile as lower octane fuel. This has worked for me with my 86.

If you have to run a higher octane fuel and the engine is in good tune that engine is almost dead. If you can not tune the problem out you are going to have to pull the heads. Most cleaners do not work very well but you can try them if you want. I would start saving for a 350.
