How do I buy a harmonic balancer?

I'm building up a motor, and I want everything new. The balancer on this motor is gross looking, and also something like 10" wide! Are they all this big?

So how do I select one? What do you go by? Thanks!

you'll have a hard time finding one 10" diameter. look in the jegs catalog, they have everthing from stock replacement to preformance dampners

Well, I don't care how big it is (this one is the 1969 original to the motor!), I just want whatever is best for my build. I'm just not sure what you base the purchase on!

Is the "motor" internally or externally balanced?

In general, you want a bigger diameter damper with more weight on a forged crank. Smaller and lighter on a cast crank.

I always used Fluidampr pieces on my 350 SBCs and had no problems. They cost more, but they work nicely.

Not sure what the internals are, but it is a 1969 block. I believe the crank is stock.

I got my fluid damper from Speedway Motors for $140...pretty good deal.

Are there different sizes, or weights or whatever? I have no idea what to get. I don't want to spend too much, but I want everything done right!

That says V6...?

Also, don't I have to know something else, like kevinc said, about being internally or externally balanced?

V6 V8 same balancer. Small Block Chevy Gen I is the application. ..click on application..its says what it fits.
If its a 69 350 then its most likely internally balanced

V6 and SBC V8.

Unless you have a 383 or 400, you don't need to know whether internal or external balance. All 350-smaller are internal balance.

Ok, good to know! So buy the one linked above?

Also, anything related to this I should get? Or is this all there is to it?

Hmm, I'm going to have to paint quite a bit I think, as everything is new!

I just have to find a place to powdercoat everything

Be sure and verify timing marks on balancer are correct when you install it. If not purchase the correct timing tab or mark the balancer yourself.

Hmm, the one in the link says for mildly built... does aluminum heads, new cam, and a Stealth Ram still fit under that?

Just want to make sure before I order everything!
