Another starting issue... wierd one.
First off... here's the car:
89 Formula WS6
350 TPI 700R4
Ok, now for the issue:
1st start of the day is fine. 2nd start of the day is fine. Go beyond that and I have problems. Seems everytime I run errands and have more than two stops... I'm going to be stranded for a bit.
The starter is working... turning the motor over but it just won't start. Just cranks and cranks and cranks...
But if I let it sit, after it won't start, it'll start right up again. Sometimes 30 min later to several hours later.
This is very annoying... anyone have any ideas?? Any help is appreciated.

i've had a similer problem, mine would shut off after 40 minutes with or without me wanting it too, i resolved the problem with getting high performance module, recent changes to my car i guess just wouldn't handle the stock module no more, strange as it is, the accel performance i got for $70 bucks solved everything. Unless someone more knowlogable objects, i'd think about atleast trying it, if its not .... you know can remove that as a near future problem.

Car only has headers and gears.
I have replaced the coil when it completely went out on me driving on the highway a few months ago.
As far as the module... can you link me to a pic of that part? I'm rather new to the TPI world and just can't think of what that is.

if you pull the distributor cap off by unscrewing the 2 cap screws and simply pulling the rotor piece off, just pulls up and off... you'll see a black box "color may vary" sitting on the plate held down by 2 5mm or 7/32 bolts ... 2 clips coming in firewall side and one passenger side around the distributor .... its the only thing there can't miss it ....

ecm heating up can cause same type of issue also, might want to check the resistance of your injectors, but it is more likely the ign module ive replaced 2 recently one just yesterday.

yeah, like i said ... i replaced my stock module twice in a week ... sure it would fire up but it would run from 40 minutes to 3 hours, then when i'd shut it off "or at 40 minutes when it would shut itself off" i'd try to restart it a few hours later and nothing till 12+ hours usally in the mornings .... i replaced the stock with that accel performance that i paid $70 for and with using the 6a msd box and accell performance coil i've had no issues since then, course its only been a few days but hell, its running strong again .... i'm also investing $200 into a code reader, these things drive me nuts ... hehe ..... if you didn't toss in a performance module, ya might wanna look into that. solved my issue.
b.t.w .. most shops O.E use G.P soreson ... if your running one of them, thats the exact problem i had.

If the car is falling on its face and shutting itself off after running for a while im willing to bet your ecm is overheating, check the resistance on your injectors ill bet at least a couple are going bad.

Thanks for the help guys.
I'm thinking it's not ecm related because it doesn't fall on it's face or try to turn itself off. Just after the 3rd turn car off back on again it gets pissy. Get's on the edge of starting up but just not quite there.
I'll look into the injector thing as well as the module.
Edit: And FYI, I replaced the module and coil with OEM replacement from O'reillys.

Do you smell gas when it does this? Like it's flooding out? Might have an injector leaking....
But I'd still vote for a heat sink issue. Since you've replaced the module and coil though, that lessen's that possibility.

don't forget to put the grease on that comes with the new one. this is very important. it acts as a heat shield to prtect the electroics. spread an nice even layer across the bottom. this will help with replacing them more than once. they should last about 100,000 miles. bin there done that.

i personally go as far as spraying a aeresol silicone grease on the plate itself, then applying the grease ... which in the stock replacements sucks imo ... but it helps 100%

I made sure to have an even layer before install. I was hoping that when I replaced the coil and the module that it would solve my problem because the car has been doing this since I got it.

I've had the same problem with my car. When its cold it fires with half a crank of the motor, when hot, it takes forever. First I started by swaping out the cap and rotor. That fixed it for a while. Then it started to happen again so I swapped the cap, rotor, and ign module. That fixed it for a while again. Then it happened again so I took it to a shop. The whole distributor was shot. I put an MSD Pro-Billet in and that fixed it for a while. Now its doing it again. Mine always restarts but you have to crank it for a while with the pedel to the floor (this keeps it from spraying more fuel in while cranking so it doesnt flood and allows more air in). Since I bought my shop my car has been in storage so we havent had chance to look at it here yet. Im planning on swapping the motor out anyway so hopefully that will take care of the problem once and for all. I know I have some wires that are shorting out in there somewhere. The whole engine bay needs rewired. Id check around in the bay and see if you have any frayed wires going into the distributor.
BTW, I also replaced my injectors with Accels and that didnt fix the problem. Its much more likely to be electric then fuel related.
