It seems most years of Camaro's you have to take out the dash, but on mine all I had to do was take out a black panel under the dash, only took about 30 mins.

It's real messy I suggest that you put down quite a few towels in the car or it's going to smell like coolant for a long time. I also recomend lots of beer along with someone to bull$hit with.

You should not have to drain the coolant since you've already bypassed the core.

From what I see in repair manuals you can get to the core from the interior. Taking off the dash panel might allow some extra light on the scene.
I would have to strongly agree with placing towels on the floor board!!
Even thought it leaked, it may still have a good amount of water in it.
Also remember the ECM is over there as well. You may have to remove the ECM to get better access to the core, but maybe not. Either way try to cover it with plastic or something just incase it gets wet.

This is one of those gotta think ahead type of repairs.

You might want to check into getting the heater core repaired if it's $50 for a new one. Call a radiator shop and ask how much it would be to have a heater core brass welded.

Check around for some more prices, the more money you save on the core, the more money you can spend on that beer you're gonna need.

New Heater Core $50.00

30 pack of Beer $13.99 (bud, coors, etc)

Boom Box Radio $35.00 ? guessing

All the fun you had replacing that heater core while jammin to some tunes and popping a few tops.........PRICELESS!!!!

Note: Prices may vary in your area.

I'd say blow the heater core out with some compressed air so you don't spill coolant all over the interior. this would help even more if there was coolant in the core. however, if it had leaked into the heater box and has a bunch of coolant in there somwhere (probably usually the case in heater core failures, but probably not for you since it's probably evaporated by now) you still want to take the proper precautions...

I've got a question. If he blows the coolant out of the core where's it going to go? Isn't it going to get all over the engine. Maybe if he had a catch can over the outlet or something. I guess I answered my own question.

Since coolant has a very high boiling point it doesn't evaporate that well. Couple that with the fact that it's pretty hard for vapor to get out of those two little copper pipes, and I say that there is still enough coolant in there to **** you off when it spills in the car.

Flush it with clean water first. Then blow it out with air. That way, any water still in the core will be clean and won't stain the carpet or smell bad or feel slimy or...

Having done mine a few years ago, I was pleased to find out that the job LOOKS a lot harder than it really is. First of all, you don't have to disassemble the dash at all. Don't even bother taking the dash pad off, you won't get much light from the top anyway. I don't remember having to pull the ECM, either.

What I do recommend is pulling out the pass. seat so you can lie down in the car. You can't really reach it from outside the car, and you sure can't do it sitting in the seat!

You don't have to touch the ECM, it's under the driver side dash while at least on an 86 anyways the heater core is under the passenger side dash.

I did the whole swap from the passenger side from the bottom. Didn't even touch the dash pad or any of that crap. Swapped that sucker out in like an hour.

BTW the ECM is on the passenger side, at least on my old 86 and 87. Not that it matters, takes only a sec to remove it.

I got the heater core at Discount Auto Parts for like $20 or $25 I believe, under $30 anyway.

I left the passenger seat in place but just about broke my back trying to get to where I could reach/see everything. Probably easier to just take it out I guess.
