help with timing

I swapped out my manifold over the weekend. After installing the distributor back what i thought was the original position, my car is beyond gutless. Thinking i set my distributor wrong, it seemed like it was retarded badly. After getting out my timing gun and advancing it 6°, shouldn't i expect it to be right at zero? At any rate, it was completely off the timing tab past all of the advancing marks! If it's that far advanced shouldn't it be pinging like crazy? I have no idea what's going on with this thing.

Just so i'm clear, if i set the gun to 6° advanced it should hit right on 0, right?

I've never used an adjustable timing light before, but I'd assume that's what you'd do. I just have a cheapy that flashes itself at spark.

If your setting it to 6* advanced, then yes, the mark should be on zero... but the ESC MUST be disconnected to set the timing regardless.

Yeaaaah i get that, but i haven't done that yet because i thought i was installing the distributor and rotor to the exact same position. I KNOW the timing was set at 10° advanced before though, guess i'm not so good at restoring things! Nevertheless, with timing advanced so drastically shouldn't i be getting some serious ping? The wrench for this is finally coming in tomorrow morning, so i'll mess around with it and see what happens.

Well, i got my timing advanced 6° and....my car's still running like a gutless wonder. My fuel pressure is at 45 with everything connected, so i'm thinking it's my TV cable. I set it by going to WOT and pulling the slider back. The thing is that i didn't get a chance to feed it back under the plenum before i slapped it back on, so it's going into the bracket area of the cable housing at a weird angle, although it seems to be getting fed through all right. What else could it be with just an intake swap?

Well, it turned out that the back of my tv cable was actually pulled out of the adjuster's housing. After going and buying a brand new one, it turned out that the old one could be snapped right back in! After adjusting it, it's now running like a monster. I would probably guess it's tv related if all you did was the intake and your timing is on.

wow i didn't know the tv could cause such issues, i forgot to route mine under the runners as well, but with some force and luck i got it back under the runner, but maybe i messed it up on the back, where does it mount exactly?

I don't get what exactly you're asking. Where does what mount? The TV cable to the housing?

sorry, im really oblivious to the function of the cable, i got it hooked up to the tb correctly, but not sure where it goes once it "disapears" behind the engine, was curious as to what to check at the other end, to see if i broke somethin

it's bolted down to the passenger side, top of the oil pan area. It's pretty hard to even see it. If the loop from the tv cable came off or broke off of the hook in the tranny, you should be able to pull your tv cable way past your throttle body. That's probably the easiest way to check if everything there is ok, although there may still be a problem. What kind of intake did you swap to? Did you try adjusting the cable?

prolem solved, found a HUGE vacuum leak at one of the runner to manifold points due to a pinched gasket (little pin you push into the intake popped out when setting the runner on) all seems to be well now
