Best quick mod for under $100?
I have a totally stock 84 Z28 and ran a 16.246 1/4 last time I was out at the track a couple weeks ago. I was wondering what a quick cheap mod would be to improve my times that I could do before this Friday? I don't have access to a jack til the weekend so it would have to be something on the motor or above ground, but I was looking for something that I could do before then.

There isn't too much that you can do with $100, my suggestion would be to buy a K&N, advance your timing (free) and make a homemade ram air kit ( most people use dryer hose and other pieces, doesn't cost that much), but I'm not to sure on how to do it.

That's kind of what I was thinking, but it was my birthday yesterday and my grandfather gave me $100, I just wanted to put it to good use ;-) I'm thinking I'm going to go with the 599-60-1450 (Jegs part #) 14 inch Open Element type.

If your engine is in stock form the best/cheapest mod is to get an open element drop base 14x3 air cleaner. Get one with a 1/2in spacer. Cost, around 30$. 50$ for a K&N filter. 15$ for the gromet set and breather cap that you will need to replace the stock breather with an aftermarket air cleaner.

Spend another $10 and go back to the track and learn to drive. It took me 100+ passes in my (flamesuit on) Civic to be deadly consistant. Even the stock class bracket racer hunted me down asking me about bracket racing.
"I have a son and no time on Saturday nights for racing" is what I told him.
"Good!" he said, no need for the competetion!
The he finally realized I dated his daugther in high school.
"You should have married her"....
He runs a dead on 14.00 in his 340 dart.
And has for 12 years with only 2 refreshes.
Guess I have to win him over again!

Hehe that's the idea, but I was just looking for something to "add power" or something like that. I'm going to fool with the timing and get a K&N and hope that there's less than 200 cars there this Friday

this may not be the way you wanna go but you can get a pair of flowtech headers for like a $120. I know they may not be the best but hell anything is better than stock and they have the o2 bung to boot.

For this winter I plan on getting some JetHot coated Hooker Comp Shorties, nice and shiny they are
Not going to do anything major til then, complete Hooker exhaust and an open cat. Speaking of which my current cat is most likely clogged resulting in me being out of the 15s (that and my 2.2 60' times :-() I'm placing the order from Jegs right now for the 599-60-1450 K&N Open Element Aircleaner. Now I just have to figure out what to do with the hoses that are hooked up into the Aircleaner atm. What DO I do with the hoses like that big silver one that feeds warm air or the vacuum hose that goes to the carb or the sensor? Do I just plug them off and hope for the best or does it come with an attachment for them on the open element(heh)?

Whats the 8th digit of your VIN? H or G? Base don 16s at 80mph i'd say it's an H, in other words you do not have a HO.
If you do in fact have an L69 (vin G) then something is dead wrong with it. At worst an L69 will run mid-low 15s at ~90mph.
Maybe i'm crazy, but IMO there is nothing worse than modding a car that isn't in peak condition.

Nope it's an L69, G is the correct digit, I don't know whether the motor is tired (129k miles) or if it's out of tune, HOWEVER after I came back from the track I took it to get the tranny oil changed and found the transmission mount to be broken. Now that that's fixed my car grew some perverbial ***** and seems a Lot faster. Stay tuned for an updated set of ETs

If L69, then you should have the dual snorkel air cleaner. If so, the open element is a complete waste of money and even a step backwards.
The K&N will flow more air than paper, but isn't the best for protecting the engine. AMSOIL oiled foam air cleaners flow as much as K&N, hold as much dirt as K&N, trap smaller particles than K&N, last as long as K&N, and cost about the same as K&N.
