Why did Chevy only use this design early on? It takes up less space w/the "short" pump and "short" pullies to match.

What is the disadvantage to it...if any?

It doesn't have accessory mounting holes. It takes up less space in front of the engine, but takes up more space on the sides.

Didn't GM use that pump on the Corvette all through the '70s?

Cars got it to 1968, trucks to 1972 and Corvettes to 1970. The Corvette kept the short pump after that until 1982, but with a larger pilot shaft.

As said no accessory mounting bosses. And the rest of the pulley don't align real well.

But it can be done i have an aluminum weiand SWP on my Camaro. All it takes is a little custom bracket fabrication, which i needed to do anyway.

not to mention that the p/s brackets are a major pain in the ***,and with the long, flimsy alt. bracket, they can be bad about slinging belts at higher rpms

They were used on v8 monzas. As I recall the monza pulleys overdrive the pump approx 40%. Thats pretty high overdrive, I always wondered if the pump didn't move as much water as a long pump.

That's a very interesting thought,I had never considered a flow difference, but that is a possibility

I doubt there is a difference. Only the exterior castings are different. Internally they're pretty much the same.

Yes the C-3 vettes still used the short water pump and yes I do have belt slinging problems when I rev up past 6000 rpm. I will be doing a serpentine conversion soon.
