Head Gaskets - Again

I've searched through the boards and it seems the majority don't use gasket sealant on the head gaskets. I 'm replacing the heads and I am using Dana/Victor Heinz gaskets and in both my manuals it states to use a gasket sealant on gaskets that are not a composite material. My gaskets look like metal, but feel like they have a coating even though it looks like metal. Should I use the sealant as the manuals state. I have some of the permatex sealant designed for hard surfaces. Sealant seems like it would compress into the holes and partially obstuct them?

Also, I have the FelPro head bolt kit with the thread sealant already on the treads - do these work good? I have the permatex thread sealant to use.

Thanks,
Dan

Ive never used sealant in over 25 years, i'm sure some people do, there are probably cases where somethings damaged, and its been their only way out.
If your block and head surfaces are clean and straight you shouldnt need any.
Unless its a special circumstance or the maker\manufacturer specify some, then steer clear, as like you say, it can get into places you just dont want it to.

Thanks for the replies. I checked on Victor-Reinz/Dana website and they state don't use any. If any of their gaskets require it, it is thier policy to include it with the gaskets. I guess these new multi-layer stel gaskes have some sort of thin sealant on top that eliminates the need and helps seal slight imperfections.

How about those FelPro bolts? They are much cheaper than ARP, but has anyone used them? I see that many recommend thier gaskets.

Thanks,
Dan

I've used the fel-pro bolts with the sealant on them. They work fine so far (~500 miles since installed).

As long as the bolts are grade 10 they should work. I assume they are. You can also reuse the factory ones, although if your blowing head gaskets previously that might not be such a good idea.

I'd follow the gasket man. Instructions first like already been prev. posted. If this is being a re occurring problem for you then you should get to the bottom of the problem first. The heads and block mating surfaces has to be true. No big nicks or gouges ect. Another critical thing to do is tq. it down in stages and do it right. It also must be clean. Very clean. I've never used any type of sealant on a head gasket tho I have heard of folks complain after they used it. Hate to redo the heads from bad advice.

Figure it out the best you can and report back, it shurly will help somebody else.

No problems. I had the smoke on startup after sitting and a little bit on acceleration for the first few miles (was told it's most likely buildup in the exhaust and cat). Car ran good with plenty of power considering the motor size. I couldn't stand it anymore so I bought rebuilt stock heads to put on ($300 vs aftermarket $). I just don't want to rip all the stuff off again once I have it assembled. I'm doing it the way most state is correct - no sealear. Plus, it's much easier and cleaner than spreading that goop all over.

I have my torque wrench ready and the correct sequence. Tyring to make sure everything goes well.

Thanks,
Dan

Don't put sealant on the head gaskets or bolts.

You need non-hardening sealant on the bolts since they pass into the coolant passages.

The FelPro bolts have the stuff already on them, but I also have some Permatex thread sealer to use.

hey dsherw00d, if this is a common problem, have you ever had the head and deck surfaces checked to make sure they're flat? Uneven surfaces could be your whole problem. As for the gasket sealer, call the manufacturer of your head gaskets and ask them what they recommend. They should be the authority in your decision. Everybody has a different opinion about whether or not you should use a sealer, but the only people who know if this should be done a certain way are the people who made the gaskets.

I agree with iroczracer. Have the heads checked. Also, are you sure the head gaskets are failing? It could be an intake gasket, cracked head or cracked block. You can throw parts at the car for the rest of your life if you don't take the time to diagnose the problem.

iroczracer07, I have one side (easy side) back on and am waiting for the gasket to do the other. Napa ordered the wrong one. I'm using the Victor-Reinz 3514SG gaskets which seem like a nice gasket that will allow some imperfections. They say sealer is a bad thing - can actually react with the gasket material.

I haven't had any issues with head gaskets. I bought remanned stock heads with the same casting along with all new Clevite rockers, rods, and lifters. I was getting the blue smoke on startup and it was easier to order new heads than yank them, take them to a shop, wait, then install. This way, I was able to keep my car together longer. It was only a little bit more expensive and that's with me keeping my old heads if I want to rebuild them later.

I was hoping to have both heads back on today, but don't have the gasket. I could use another type or brand, but I think I'll wait for this one to arrive. That way, if another brand leaks, I won't be wishing I waited. This way, if one leaks they both leak.

As a note, I'm using Dana head bolts from Napa and they also have the thread sealant on them as the FelPro did.

I'm getting ready to order the headers - most likely hookers. I may also go with aftermarket runners. Depends on where I am with $$.

I edited my sig so it should now have a link to my web site. Not many pictures yet and the ones I posted are not very good. Better picture are going to be posted soon.
