Which cam would you choose?
Well, my 350 went to hell, so I'll be building a 383 to go in it's place. I'm trying to put together a good combo. I'm trying to find a good machine shop around here, so I haven't talked about the internals of the engine yet. It will be in my 82 camaro with a TH350 and 2500 stall initially. I will be getting rid of the TH350 and putting in a 700R4 and swapping the rear for a ford 9" or chevy 12 bolt with 3.42 gears. I'm shooting for an rpm range of 2500-6000. Also, the compression will be between 9.0:1-10.0-1. Here's what I've come up with so far.
Holley 750 cfm carb
Re-use my Edelbrock Performer RPM intake
TFS 23* Heads
I called Crane and Comp cams to see what they had to say about cam selection. Comp Cams suggested a cam with these specs:
Intake Dur: 228*
Exhaust Dur: 236*
Lift: 0.474"
Lobe separation: 110*
Crane Cams suggested a dual pattern cam with these specs:
Intake Dur: 226*
Exhaust Dur: 234*
Intake Lift: 458"
Exhaust Lift: 473"
Lobe separation: 114*
Which cam would you choose if it was your car, and are there any changes you'd make to my selection of parts?

TH350 tranny with 2500 stall, Eibach Pro Kit, SLP 1 3/4" headers with 3" Flowmaster exhaust

This is assuming your car is a dailey driver...
If you already have the TFS heads, get them ported out to the max. Just as long as they flow 270-280/200-210 ish.
If you havent bought the heads yet, I'd get Brodix -8 Pro, or AFR 190's.
Then get the intake port-matched.
Those cams that Comp and Crane recommended seem to lack in gross Lift.
Take a look at CompCams' Extreme energy cams. I know a few people running the 'custom' 224/236, it has 112lsa, and .533/.555 lift with 1.6 rockers. If you go much bigger than that it starts taking too much engine vacuum, killing the brakes in the process. GMPP even makes a nice cam, a little more radical than the LT4 HOT cam. It's 222/230 duration, with 543/563 lift (w/ 1.6rockers) on a 112* lsa.
Good luck! HTH!!

I would get the comp ground on a 112lsa. It's not an ecm combination right? If not stay away from a 114. Put 1.6 rockers on the intake.
You know I just thought of something.
I noticed that the 2 cams recommended to you by Crane, and Compcams, are way under .500 lift. This makes me think that 'they' assumed your Trickflow heads were the twisted wedge design. With the Twisted wedge heads, you HAVE TO keep under .500 lift or you'll have piston-to-valve clearance problems. With the 23* heads you have, you don't have that problem...

d4spd37 It will be a daily driver. What kind of prices are we talking about for the Brodix heads and what kind of power? I was planning on going for the TFS heads, because of my budget. My situation sucks. I can't afford to do anything right now. It'll be at least a month before I'll have enough money to start building the engine, probably longer. Until then, my car is like a giant paperweight. The AFRs are out of my price range. I'm willing to sacrifice some power in the name of budget and getting another form of transportation other than a f**king bicycle.

hey man what about World Products Sportsmen 2 heads. I think there kick a$$. they flow 240 cfm at .500 lift, there cheap(mine cost $1500 canadian after taxs), they have a farly large runner, 200cc compard to TFS 23 heads 195cc. and can hander .540 lift out of the book. I would go with a bit wilder cam thought. somthink like 236 duration and .520 lift, i cant think of any of the top of my head, or why dont tou build a 400. i toyed with the idea of a 383, but it just makes more sence to go with a 400.my 400 combo sounds like this. stock bottom end with ARP rod bolts, hyperutectic flat top pistions, comp 282 solid cam(.528 lift with 1.6 rockers)Sportsmen 2 heads Perfomer RPM intake 650 double pumper) that combo will be good for 440+HP and 500+ ft lbs of toque.

Something about like the CompCams XE268 with 1.6 rockers would be perfect IMO.
Has .477/.480 lift with 1.5s, should be around .507/.510 with 1.6s unless I'm mistaken. Pretty close to what they recommended. Duration is like 224/230 I believe, can't remember exactly.
I believe CarCraft or CHP built a budget 383 with that cam (with 1.5s I think), 9.0:1 compression with the TFS 23 degree heads and made right at 420hp. Not bad. I'll see if I can find the article later.

It's just a matter of piston-to-valve clearance. Try to find some other people who have actually used the same heads youre getting and see what cams they used. If you can get away with 540-560 lift, go for it. .520 sounds kind of low, but I don't know. For the Budget, I'd have to say the TFS 23* heads are the best. If you want Brodix or AFR, it's going to cost 1400-1500, compared to 850 for the TFS heads.
Good luck!
