Is it a thick neoprene reusable gasket? If so, you don't need anything. If you do glue it, glue it it the pan.

saw pictures of a gasket with some rtv stuff on it where all the rtv came off and started to plug the oil screen not too long ago on here...
it wasn't pretty. might want to be carefull when using it just to make sure you don't put too much on there and be a little sparing.
but other then that think a lot of the 1 piece gaskets don't need the rtv sealer.
might want to wait for more replies though just to make sure

you need to put a thin bead where the block, pan and timing cover come together and also the same spot on the back or else you'll have a leak. I also put a thin film all the way around the pan where it meets the block. No leaks.

4 little dabs in the usual 4 "corners" is what I always use. I've never worked up the courage to try it completely bare.

I put my 1 piece oil pan gasket on with no sealer...leaked very bad in the front. I heard that you could use them with no sealer but in my case it didn't work. I took the oil pan back off and put sealer on the front where the block, timing chain cover and oil pan come together and its been fine ever since. I'll save my money and buy a regular gasket next time.

if you use the "special tools" supplied with the gasket there is no need to do anything to keep it in place and there is no need for RTV

The tools that come with the fel pro gasket make holding the gasket in place real easy, but you still need a dab of RTV at the corners to seal the pan.

near as i can figure i've used 6 or 7 on engines i've put together, v6 and SBC, never used anything and never had a leak, or i wasn't sharp enough to spot a leak. it also could be it never had time to develope a leak, i think the v6 only got to 30,000 miles before i totaled the truck it was in, the rest less than that or for other people i have no idea how long or far they lasted.

ok sounds good. at the corners most importantly. what about the front or back part of the gasket where that big curve is. do i put anythin there or leave it alone? im talkin about thru the whole length of that section at the front and back. either where it meets the timing cover/rear main seal housing, or on the bottom where it meets the pan.

yes i put it there also ,when I put mine in and torqued to specs I actually thought to self this gasket may not have needed any sealer at all because it pushed out quite well , but then again for confussion sake I was glad I did and after 700 miles on this chvy 350 3/4 ton which has been tromp on more than a couple times no leaks just checked ;darn proud too............ tho many more mile required for certain reliability
