ok, heres the deal, this is my first swap, and my dad's first with a computer. It runs, the timing is 6 deg. btdc, it is a tbi with 55# injectors that we took apart, cleaned and reassempled with new gaskets and such, it runs between 220 and 240 almost all the time, which is wierd because we had the radiator rebuilt, put on a 160 degree thermostat, used a milodon high volume water pump, and a 2950 cfm electric fan, which is mounted 1/2" from the radiator. It also feels like it is under a heavy load, and it won't rev. I floored it at a 4 way stop, and instead of revving, it accelerated like I was driving like a granny. it spits, pops, and backfires about 30% of the time, under load at about 1600 rpms. it also bucks and drives wierd at low speeds. If it had a carb, I would say that it was a carburation problem. maybe it's timing. it was even worse when we had it advanced 4 degrees. it is also using a TON of gas. In neutral it revs fine, no hesitation, no pissing or moaning at all. the chip was burned by jet, and is for 58# injectors, because thats what we thought we were getting. any ideas?
need to check fuel pressure, tps and min air
i had over heating problems i just put in a 330 hp 350 with tbi on top and it was overheating a when i get stuck in traffic, i had a 160 t-stat, fan switch pretty much so low that it would turn on, on start up and it would still like you. so because i had my ac decompressed i just took out the radiator and i would not be using it for a long time so i did not worry about it too much but anyways after i took that out i ran too cold i had to take out my 160 and put in a 180 t-stat.
i would defently look at your fp because you are prolly running either really rich or lean, you also have to check the tps and the min air correctly.
dont worry i have gone though all of that stuff and still in some of it, had the same prob and i just had to ajust the fuel pressure.

Are you sure the timing is right? It sounds like severely retarded timing.
What timing cover & balancer did you use? Have you checked the timing mark to be sure it's accurate?

ok, how do you do that? What is the tps and min air? I am clueless. The only cars I know how to work on don't have computers anywhere in sight. the timing is ok I think, I thought it was timing too. I'll try advancing it though.

https://www.thirdgen.org/messgboard/...ML/014395.html go there and read the article that vader has made and it will tell you the way to ajust the tps and min air.
any more questions just ask
and fuel pressure you have to remove some sort of cap on the tbi to get to the fuel pressure screw, i dont know i have a holly unit and there is a big cap right on top of it, if running lean, loosen screw, go counter clockwise, and rich, tighten the screw go clockwise.

ok, as for the timing, we had to jump a and b on the ADLD connector or whatever it is, and we are going to advance it to 0 tonight, it is at 8 deg btdc now. Being severely retarded might be the problem. My dad thinks that getting the chip burned for 58# holley injectors is the problem. He thinks the holly injectors us different signals from the computer, and thats why it is messewd up. I dunno, because it runs ok 85-90% of the time. would putting a supplemental fuel pump and an adjustable regulator help? Would going to a holley 670 cfm TB work? It has the 58# injectors doesn't it? Will it bolt on my performer TBI manifold and hook up without too much fuss? Where can I get one cheap? Are they on ebay? I let you know what happens, thanks for the help! I need all I can get. and thanks for the link to that post, I hope it helps. is this problem common?

and is there really a mixture control screw on the tbi? how does it control the mixture? Fuel pressure? and finally, the thing straight has no guts. I have a hard time keeping up with the minivan starting from a stop light. at least I know my transmission is awesome though. I have never felt a harder 1-2 shipt, it is amazing, even though I can't get on it that hard yet.
sorry, I just read the article. My car is TBI. Does a TBI even have a min air sensor? That whole article seems to be for Tuned port injected engines. me and my dad have no idea what we are doing with all the electronic stuff.
lol you will learn soon dont worry
well i should have asked you this a little bit ago. were did you get this 350?
well the same things basicly apply to tpi and tbi, they both have the basic senors such as the iac and the tps, before you do any thing or go out and buy anything you HAVE to get the tps and the min air set becasue that could be a large portion of the things that are wrong.
the holly injectors are not the greatest i have heard but they will work just fine they are basicly the same and dont use a different "signal".
the preformer tbi intake i have heard from many that its easy and others it can be difficult and takes modification for it to work and i dont really know why ebay would not sell on of them they sell every thing else it seems.
and yes there is a fuel pressure thing on your tbi, go to the tec articals and find make your tbi have a ajustable fuel pressre or something like that and it will explain every thing or should.
PS. dont worry someday you will be able to beat the minivan :P

Timing sounds retarded to me. I see many crate motors installed with an old balancer and the timing cover that came with the crate motor. Many 350 balancers are made to have the timing tab straight up behind the water pump. Crate motors usually have the tab off to the drivers side. If you use that balancer with that timing cover your timing will be very retarded. Try adjusting the timing so that when you look straight down behind the water pump the mark on the balancer is straight up. If it runs better there this is your problem. You'll need to either remark or change your balancer or replace the timing cover.
