Whining noise coming from the distributor?

I think I have a whining noise coming from my distributor. Is this the noise they make just before they puke? If so, $100 seems to be the price for a reman from Autozone or similiar.

Very loud. We can see some wear on the underside of the cap where the rotor is hitting it. We trimmed off part of the rotor to keep it from hitting, but it still does it. Now we think it might be the actual distributor assembly.

New cap and rotor = no fix.

Maybe pull it out and inspect it to see if it could be fixed before buying a new one.

I wouldn't know how to fix a distributor beyond a module, cap or rotor replacement.

There's not much to them. Drive out the roll pin, take the gear off and pull the shaft out.

Can you buy the individual pieces beyond the gear and stuff already metioned? I think the dizzy is the root of it.

I'm not sure what parts are available new, I usually just mix and match parts from used ones.

If needed, Autozone has Accell dizzy BRAND NEW for $127 (assuming you need non comp controlled vac advance HEI dizzy). I haven't checked to see where you stand lately on the mods - maybe you need something different. Ahhh, didn't know you were being "watched" did ya Gunny? LOL

It's the one with the brown cap, and comes with cap and nick knacks (springs and such - things I'm too stupid to touch). But they don't always think to show it too you when you ask for just a dizzy, often they just look up numbers in system for reman. parts on shelves in back rather than sell the new stuff off the drool rack.

The dizzy in my 1990 TBI "squeals" when it's cold (like now, under 40) in the morning for about 2 minutes, and has done it for 2 years now, but it all works ok - I took it all apart 2 years ago, put in new grease, rotor, and ignition module, and it still squeals when cold, so I left it alone and it functions, just noisily during the winter starts.

You may just need to shim the gear some more.
