best advice would be to trash it and throw an aftermarket holley four barrel on it imo. Then again you'll get the answers as to how to tune it by somewhere here soon i hope for your sake!

sounds like a timing problem more than a carb problem

If the car is dieseling, running after you shut her off, then firebird45331 is right it sounds like you could have a timing problem.I would check that first. Also when was the last time you replaced your cap/rotor,wiresand plugs(really a full tuneup with new filters probably wouldn't hurt if it's been awhile).A bad plug wire can cause backfiring by allowing a cylinder to load up on fuel without burning it then it misfires. You can damage the cat and muffler with backfiring(I've learned this the hard way more than once)Your carb could still be out of adjustment - especially if idle is set to high or the idle solenoid is out of adjustment. Also check all your vacuum hoses.

ok to give you the run down the car just had a new engine put in a 9 months ago of course with new cap rotors plugs wires filters everything new!! One day i was driving and a wire got burned on my manifold then my check engine light came on the wire goes to me smog stuff well i reconected that the check engine light stays on. Well then i started having this problem i didnt know what to do so i went out and bought a new rebuilt oem carb but it still continued. then the car went to the tranny shop and was there for 8 months and i just got it back and all these problems got worse i will start with the timing and see if that helps what should my timing be set to???

The check engine light will stay on till you reset the computor,do this by disconnecting the positive battery cable for a few minutes.BUT before you do this check to see what codes have been stored. That will give you what direction to head in.On the timing I don't know what it should be set to for the 2.8(someone else on here probably does).Have you checked thru the V6 board? If your emissions sticker is still on the radiator support/fan guard that should give you factory timing specs.Remember to disconnect the EST sensor wire(tan w/black stripe)located next to the heater/evaporator box before you try to reset/check timing.
Check all your wiring for burnt/loose connections.same with all you vacuum lines.Did you torgue the new carb to specs(Haynes says 132in-lbs) when you installed?

Chances are you have a big vacuum leak. The symptoms are classic.

You can use an un-lit propane torch to help find the leak.

Propane is a fuel, so the idle speed will pick up significantly.
