Im working these up in a hurry, trying to get my car back on the road ASAP. These are still work in progress, though the intake bowls and runners are 99% done. Most of the work now is going to be putting the polish on the exhaust ports.
These are not being perfected, i'm just wanting to give them a good kick in the pants over stock. But i have removed a good amount of material in places that i've learned to be productive.
When i'm done porting them i'm putting stainless steel undercut valves in them so hopefully that will help too.
Just a word of the wise; these heads are thin in some areas, i've broken through 3 times on this head (2 in the pushrod pinch area and 1 in a intake bowl). I didnt remove a lot of metal in the place where i broke through in the bowl, i have a photo if anyones intrested in the thin area i found.
How do they look?

I know some of you have ported and tested these heads before.

spike i got my valves off of ebay. i couldnt argue with the price, and they are very nice looking valves too. heres what i have; eBay Motors: 1.94 1.50 Stainless Valves W/locks NEW EPN! SBC 350! (item 8052699635 end time Apr-07-06 17:56:59 PDT)
he's lowered the price some too, that is a steal for what you're getting (thats the valves and locks). I spoke with the seller, hes a very good guy, seemed genuinely intrested in what i was doing and gave me a hell of a deal. When i ordered mine i had him add in moly chrome retainers, and he threw in an extra set of offset locks with-out even telling me, for free. I think i spent a total of 100$ usd on the valves, moly retainers and moly locks. highly recomend this guy.
i'm hoping i can make some good power with these heads. good luck with yours too!

haha, now you're rushing. Wanna race to completion?
you STILL punched through this head ? boy, is this your 3rd set of heads in a row you've done that with ?
question for ya; are you actually using a liquid/paste polish ? When I went to "polish" my heads I just used wd-40 on a cross buff, no actual "polish" was used.
also, i'd recommend using sanding rolls (tapered or not) in the combustion chamber, if you have the time.
ps. I put in my cam and timing cover last night. better hurry

sonix, i used w/d 40 and a cross buff on my exhaust and they look like chrome. (man those pins were a p.i.a. to drill)thanks again.
you will probably both beet me, my block is all together, heads are a week or so but i still need to buy new intake and decide witch carb (edelbrock or holly 650 or 750) to use. decisions, decisions.

oh right, that was you. Those were such a PITA to drill, I made a jig and just pulled mine, and tapped them for mr gasket collared studs... seems to work, time will tell though.
yea, mine turned out very shiny with a cross buff, but i'm getting them back assembled from the machine shop soon, so maybe I could use a felt bob and some autosol....

yes im rushing!!
when i saw how far along you were i was very jealous and it just further proves that i move at the pace of a 3 toed sloth on a good day.
I pulled and tapped mine for mr gasket studs too, it was a breeze on these 083 heads. It was a job on the 416's, they really gave me a fight. i'm a pretty big guy and using a breaker bar and all it was still trying..
This head here is the same one i punched through on before that i posted in the other thread. you'll be able to grate cheese with this thing when i'm done with it. The 416's thickness ruined me i guess, i opened up that area so much more on the 416's, and on this one i was just trying to smooth out the roughness and got a little carried away.
I have the SA porting kit too, so i'll be using the cross buffs to polish the chambers and exhaust. I still need to hit the exhaust with the 80 grit and flap wheel too. That cross buff got me thinking of trying to polish my crankshaft with it; i wonder how well it would work at that?

very bad idea. I think it'd be too rough. use silicon aluminum bearings, it'll do it for you!
haha, everybody needs some motivation every now and again, if I finish before you, i'll post a nice video of exhaust rumble, and tire shredding glory.

I would like to know the same spike. When i get mine together i'll be using the factory stamped rockers.
But one of the first "planned" mods will be better rockers when the funds permit it.

here you go.
just take care here, i dug a small rut when removing the small casting humps there and was trying to smooth it out. trust me, the rut wasnt as bad as this hole! i should have just smoothed it out with sanding rolls, or just lived with it, it wasnt that bad in the first place. this is the kind of things that happen when you work too long on them with-out breaks (or i guess dont know how thick they are here).
the other picture is a cut-away of a 416 casting head from the SA porting guide. Look how thick it is in this area!
