valve lash

stock 305 tpi, can you do the valves with car running? back off till clicking starts tighten slowly till quiet + 3/4 turn?

Correct. Adjust them running. Its the best way. Some people go 1/4 turn, some half, some 3/4 and some full turn. You will be ok on any of them.

they sell clips or put cardboard into bottom of the head so it hits and runs down

Oil just drips out of the holes. Doesnt spray unless you rev it. I've never had oil outside of the motor while doing it this way. The dry procedure is the hard and long way.

Just for the record my GM service manual tells you to do it with the engine off and 1 turn of adjustment. My understanding of the hydraulic lifter is that when the cam is at maximum lift the plunger in the lifter is just bottoming in it's bore and as the lobe falls away oil pressure keeps the lifter in contact with the cam, so if you only tighten the lock nut a quarter of a turn you will not get all the lift from your cam.
