Why does my car do this?

So pretty much the problem I am having with this car is an odd one, it doesnt occur every time but it does get annoying when it happens.

On my way home today, I was at a stoplight and something was wrong, I looked at my RPM gauge and found that the idle was sitting at 500.

Some people will say its normal for the car to be that low, but not on mine. The idle usually sits anywhere from 550-650, usually sits at 600.

Basically whenever the idle gets that low the car starts acting terrible, I have to stop very very slowly otherwise if I stop hard or just stop in general, the car will die and it will be a pain in the *** to start it up again.

What it will do during this phase is the idle will lope back and forth, it will sometimes jump just below 500 and then quickly spring back up (this happens when I am braking)

I have done all the service maintenance, plugs, distributor cap, rotor, fuel filter, TPS, O2 sensor...

The only thing I have yet to do is plug wires. I do have a miss in the car..and I know its probably my plug wires because they are in pretty bad shape...

Anyways, is there anything else that might be causing this?

Do a search on adjusting the IAC (Idle Air Control) and TPS (Throttle Position Sensor). Come to think of it, there may be a tech article on it. Anyway, that helped smooth out my idle.

*edit*

Here it is:

This is for a TPI car but it's the same idea on a TBI.

check the IAC, and get a set of performance wires. Your beat up wires might be arcing and causing you to miss, like you mentioned.

where is the IAC located? Dumb question I am aware...

Spark plug wires shouldnt be a problem to replace, however, can anyone recommend me some good durable ones. I don't care for performance Accel or MSD ignition wires cause I dont have the time nor does my car need such wires...

I was thinking more along the lines of AC Delco...or Duralast....or even Autolite...I don't wanna spend more than 40 dollars on a set

if you get duralast, spring for the lifetime wires. That way, just say the wires are arcing every other oil change and get free ones lol.

The IAC motor is on your tb. It works like a plunger letting in air or shutting it off.

IAC located the same side as the TPS on your TBI. The IAC has 4 wires going into it.

too much to list

okay firs check and see if your a/c is on when you stop my cars a/c would kick on and off and that always killed my engine but an easier not check your ditributor position / timing and if that doesnt work you could always adjust your throttle linkage to make your car idle higher
